Subject:Students Give Back to First Responders
As part of the Who Is NOBODY? project at Spruce Ridge Community School in Durham, the Grade 7/8 class came up with the idea of showing appreciation to first responders in the local community.  Students and staff focused specifically on officers with West Grey Police Service, firefighters out of the Durham station of West Grey Fire Service, and the paramedics stationed in Durham.  As a class, they learned about the benefits, challenges, and risks involved with this type of work, and about the long term physical, emotional, and relational impacts over time.

The class decided to make a small 'care package' for each officer, paramedic, and firefighter containing small items, such as gum, hard candy, hand warmers, small Kleenex packages, or hand sanitizer.  A card of appreciation created by a student was also included.  All of the items were donated by members of the class and their families and friends.

On Wednesday, December 19th, the class was pleased to welcome Constable Chad Brown, Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Hilgendorf, and Paramedic Tim Sullivan for a classroom visit where the students were able to present the care packages, express their appreciation, and enjoy some hot chocolate and conversation together.
