Subject:GHSS Students Saddle Up for Success
To:
Grey Highlands Secondary School students are participating this year in the Saddle Up For Success program as part of a partnership between the school and Hope Haven Therapeutic Riding Centre in Markdale. This is a research-based school program established to help students develop self-confidence and stronger self-regulation and coping skills to better deal with feelings such as anxiety, fear, and frustration.

Each student recently had an opportunity to meet the horse they would be working with for the duration of their time at Hope Haven.  This was followed by a tour of the barn and arena, along with an introduction to horse grooming, riding equipment, and tack.  Students were taught horse anatomy, how to mount their horses, and then how to walk, steer, balance, and trot.  They also learned about various riding techniques, dismounting, untacking, and etiquette.  As an additional arts and crafts activity, students got involved in the construction of bird feeders.

The day spent at Hope Haven was a fabulous experience for ALL!  Ms. Roehrig, Mr. Fraser, and Ms. Gunion accompanied the students with the next session commencing in April for students with unique learning needs.
