Subject:Celebrating Black History Month
February is Black History Month, which provides an opportunity for all Canadians to recognize, celebrate, and increase their awareness regarding the legacy, history, and cultural contributions of Black Canadians, both past and present.  The 2019 theme for Black History Month as designated by the Government of Canada is “Black Canadian Youth: Boundless, Rooted and Proud” to honour our young citizens who continue to contribute to our country’s rich diversity and identity.

Originally a weeklong occasion, Black History Month was extended to a full month in 1976.  Official recognition by the federal government occurred in 1995 following a motion introduced by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman in Parliament.

Bluewater District School Board joins others across Canada in celebrating and promoting awareness of Black History Month as part of the board strategic priority to “provide quality instruction and learning experiences in an equitable and inclusive environment.”
