Subject:Minister of Education visits Bluewater District School Board
To:
It was an excellent opportunity to showcase the many diverse assets of our local rural school communities. Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter paid a visit to Bluewater District School Board on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 where she received tours of Paisley Central School and Beavercrest Community School in Markdale.  Also joining for the visit was Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker.

Each school tour began with introductions by the principal and Director of Education Alana Murray, followed by a classroom visit for a chance to meet students and their teacher.  During the visit to Paisley Central School, Minister Hunter observed a class exercise where Grade 1-2 students participated in group work to create and solve number problems using manipulatives and mental mathematics strategies.  At Beavercrest Community School, the Grade 7-8 class engaged in a collaborative project using technology to develop public awareness campaigns as part of a learning activity on the power of persuasion.

The day concluded with a meeting in Markdale, including Minister Hunter, MPP Walker, representatives from Bluewater District School Board, the Municipality of Grey Highlands, Chapman’s Ice Cream, and Parataxis Design and Development Corporation regarding a proposed public private partnership for Beavercrest Community School.

“It was a pleasure to welcome Minister Hunter for a firsthand glimpse of our vibrant school communities in Bluewater.  Her visit provided us with a unique opportunity to highlight the commitment of rural communities working together thanks to the collaborative efforts of caring staff, parents, students, and stakeholders,” says Superintendent of Education Wendy Kolohon.

“We appreciate Minister Hunter’s gesture of a visit to recognize the importance of rural schools, and to demonstrate her support for Bluewater’s work with our community partners to serve the best interests of students in Bruce and Grey Counties,” says Director of Education Alana Murray.
