Full STEAM Ahead at Northport
Grade 1 students at Northport Elementary School in Port Elgin have been busily engaged in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities.  The students have been using Osmo tools, which work in conjunction with their five classroom iPads.  The iPads sit on a base and utilize a free app to work in conjunction with concrete materials, such as letter and number tiles, and tangram blocks, which students move and manipulate in real-time. These are used to consolidate literacy and math expectations, including spelling, writing, addition/subtraction, geometry, and spatial sense.  The class is also using Osmo's "Coding Awbie" game to introduce young students to coding concepts.  Another tool, Osmo's "Coding Jam", applies the students' coding knowledge in the creation of musical pieces.  This enables a unique way of integrating the "Arts" element of STEAM.  A class favourite is the Osmo "Pizza Co." tool, in which students use coins for given money amounts, and to make correct change.  With "Cheddar," the classroom's Code and Go coding mouse, students plan a route for the robot mouse to reach its cheese, and then program the mouse accordingly using directional keys.  These tools are being utilized with much success and student enthusiasm across subject areas ranging from language, visual arts and music to math and science!
