EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

VIMY RIDGE ANNIVERSARY

A group of Bluewater District School Board students traveled to France to participate in the 90th anniversary service at Vimy Ridge on April 12, 2007.  This trip included students from all across Canada.

The students participating had the opportunity to witness the commemorative activities associated with this historic battle.  The trips itinerary was designed to emulate the experiences of young Canadian solders who made their way to England and France and the Western Front 90 years ago.  Each student represented a Canadian who died at Vimy Ridge and wore a replica of a WWI Canada uniform shirt with that soldiers name on it.  The students also created a “We Remember Memorial Capsule” that they received permission to have enshrined at Vimy Ridge with the personal tributes that the students prepared in memory of the solder that they chose to represent.

After years of waiting and anticipation, on Monday April 2nd 2007, fifty-two staff, students, parents, and community members from Chesley District High School as well as over three thousand students from across Canada set out to Vimy Ridge France to be apart of the 90th anniversary “Return to Vimy” rededication ceremony where a forty metre memorial stands commemorating the courageous acts of Canadian troops at the battle of Vimy Ridge in April 9-12 1917, during the first world war. Vimy Ridge was the turning point in the war for the Allies and is said to be when Canada first became a nation. Along with the seeing the Vimy memorial and taking part in the ceremony, participants also toured various other world war one and two cemeteries, memorials, battle sites, and other French historic sites including the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, the Eiffel tower. This once in a lifetime trip was a great success and enjoyed by all.

Bluewater schools that attended the ceremonies were, Chesley District High School, Georgian Bay Secondary School, West Hill Secondary School, and OSCVI.   There were approximately 134 students from Bluewater that were involved in this trip.  The students from each school were on different tour programs so the student senators from each school will be asked to comment on their experience and the impact that the trip had on the students from that school.
