Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence

Specialist High Skills Major – Agriculture

Chesley District High School

Earlier this year Joy Johnson, former principal at CDHS, learned about an opportunity to apply for funds for innovative programs related to agriculture.  She submitted an application on behalf of the Specialist High Skills Major Agri-Business program at Chesley District High School.

On Friday, April 27, 2007, Chesley District High School was proud to be one of the regional recipients of the Province of Ontario Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence recognizing the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Agriculture at the school.

Dalton McGuinty stated, “I believe a vibrant Agriculture sector is one of the pillars of a strong and prosperous society.  Innovations in Agriculture, such as the SHSM program in Agriculture at CDHS, will be instrumental in helping Ontario compete, and win, in today’s global economy.”  This award recognizes those in the Agriculture sector, who have thrived in this area through their vision, creativity and resourcefulness.  These programs are vital in generating new products, creating jobs, and forging new opportunities in the Agriculture sector.

More than 230 individuals and businesses shared their ideas, inventions and innovations in Agriculture.  From the 230 plus applications, which included the SHSM program at CDHS, a committee of peers in the Agriculture sector carried out the difficult task of selecting 55 recipients of the award.  Chesley District High School was one of the final 55 regional winners to receive this prestigious award.

The presentation included a beautiful silver alloy plaque from The Honourable Dalton McGuinty and The Honourable Leona Dombrowsky; Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.  A farm gate sign and cheque for $5,000.00 to further sustain and augment the program was also given to Chesley District High School.  MPP Carol Mitchell and MPP Bill Murdoch presented the award to the CDHS SHSM team made up of:  Joy Johnson – former principal and SHSM Program Coordinator, Ron Code, current CDHS principal, teachers Dennis Watson and Kate Marshall, Jean Stephenson – Student Success Leader, Ron and Ingrid DeVisser – CDHS Parents and Members of the School Community Council, Adam DeVisser – CDHS Student and Ambassador for the SHSM Program.

On behalf of the Bluewater District School Board we want to congratulate the CDHS SHSM Agri-Business Program team on this outstanding achievement.
