Board Meetings
Professional Activity Day Plan

September 18, 2007

Our BWDSB Community – Collective, Connected & Caring!

In October 2006, The Ministry of Education launched a document entitled,
At that time, the challenging directive was issued to each School Board in Ontario
to pick up and carry the torch of Character Development for all of our students.

Under the leadership of Todd Wainwright, Principal of Amabel-Sauble School and a Character Development Committee, our Bluewater District School Board Character Development Initiative was undertaken.  As we prepared for this focus in our school year, we searched for a keynote speaker who could effectively articulate the moral imperative for our system to reflect the good character that we expect and hope for our students, staff and communities.

On August 21 we welcomed Dr. Bruce Ferguson to the Administrator Symposium to address this moral imperative of creating cultures in our educational world that develops the whole child. Dr. Ferguson shared the experiences and research in which he has been involved that have continued to fuel his resolve to change the cultures in schools to focus on making all students successful !

The second day of the Administrator Symposium was dedicated to facilitating the dialogue amongst Principals and Managers about what are we currently doing in our schools/departments to develop the character of our students.  This was in preparation for their role as facilitators for the afternoon sessions on the Sept 24 PD Day.

Dr. Bruce Ferguson will speak on Sunday September 23, 2007 at 7:00pm at The Grey Roots Museum.
The title of his address will be “Making Kids Successful Is OUR Job !”  The Parental Involvement Committee has been involved in the support of this evening for students, parents and community.

The September PD Day is designed similarly to the broadcast structure used in last year’s PD Day when we had David Warlick as the guest speaker. The day is designed to bring each and every BWDSB employee together (at least by internet connection) to focus on this Character Development initiative. We will be broadcasting Dr. Ferguson’s address from OSCVI to each of the remaining 10 secondary schools and the Markdale Board Office.  All employees will attend a secondary school in the morning to hear Dr. Bruce Ferguson’s comments.  In the afternoon, entire school staffs will meet back at their schools and departments will meet in designated locations to work together to discuss character development under the guidance of their Principals and Managers respectively.

The theme of this PD Day and our 2007-08 school year is
Character Development in BWDSB
