Link Crew – Creating a Learning Community Program
Link Crew Proposal and Staggered Entry for the 2008 - 2009 School Year

Over 1500 Grade 9 students and over 250 Link Crew Leaders (grade 11 and 12 senior student mentors) from each of our 11 secondary schools took part in the board’s Link Crew Day on Tuesday, September 4, 2007.

Grade 9 students were welcomed by a high spirited assembly that identified them as the Graduating Class of 2011. This was followed by smaller mentor groups in more private locations throughout the school.  Grade 9 students quickly learned that someone cares about them, knows their name, and would be there to help them navigate the high school experience.

The day was heralded as a huge success by everyone involved and the schools and board staff received many positive comments from the community.  For this reason, we suggest that Bluewater District School Board continue Link Crew Day for September 2008.

All teaching and support staff will report to work as usual on the first day, Tuesday, September 2, 2008, and the day’s activities will allow each of our new students the opportunity to adjust to high school in a less stressful format.  Students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 will report to school for their first day of classes on Wednesday, September 3, 2008.

Recommendation:
That we continue with staggered entry and implementation of Link Crew in secondary schools for September 2008.
