Excellence in Education
Friday Night Lights

On Friday October 10th West Hill Secondary School was the scene of the first annual ‘Friday Night Lights’ football showdown between cross town rivals WHSS Raiders and the OSCVI Falcons.

This incredible community event was made possible through the dedication of WHSS staff members and the generous support of the Owen Sound Community.

WHSS staff members helped in a variety of ways: Barb Osborne and her grade 12 Physical Education staff coordinated the entire event supported by John Kosempel, Ted Carr, Kelly Wilkens and Bonnie Cameron. Student, Caly Osborne designed the program which was distributed at the event.  Peter Stewart was the field coordinator.  Andy McKerroll oversaw the sound/tech crew.  The administrative team of Bernice Payne, Peter Hughes and Andrea Tang were active participants in the planning and as members of the WHSS cheering squad at the game.

The stadium sized portable lights that lit the field ensured that the over 1500 spectators could clearly see an exciting football game.  Tickets were sold in advance by community members at Douglas Cleaners, Bill’s Barber Shop, Bayshore Country Feeds and by staff and students.

Giant Tiger donated a tent and No Frills donated all the paper products.  The City of Owen Sound provided picnic tables and supported the presence of Community Police Officers.  St. John’s Ambulance was on site.  CRS Rental Equipment provided the lights and generators at a much reduced price, Dominos Pizza discounted their rates and Fast Forward provided the extra power supply.  East Side Snowmobiling Association provided stakes to create boundaries.

The following community partners donated a variety of items for lucky draws:  TD Canada Trust, BDO, Stone Tree, KC Automotive, the Owen Sound Greys and HMV.

The warm fall weather provided the ideal context for this authentic community celebration.  Those in attendance ranged in age from babies in arms to senior citizens.  The atmosphere was as warm as the weather and created a tremendous sense of community.

Attending today’s Board meeting to share the excitement with the trustees are: Barb Osborne and John Kosempel (WHSS teachers), Bernice Payne (WHSS principal), a member of the WHSS football team and a grade 12 WHSS physical education student.

While the outcome on the field may not have been to the liking of the WHSS community, WHSS was the true winner in the eyes of the community for the incredible event they staged.

Bluewater Foundations for Learning references the value we place in partnerships.  It states “We value the contributions made by students, school, parents, and the local community towards the education of our children”.  ‘Friday Night Lights’ was a classic example of that Foundation principle in action.
