Excellence in Education

Eat and Learn

The Grey Bruce Eat and Learn is an organization that oversees all of the Breakfast and Nutrition Programs in Bluewater District School Board and Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board.  Bluewater District School Board is the lead agency that acts as the administrator of this program.  Eat and Learn is spearheaded by a committee comprised of community and school board members.  There is representation from Bruce Power, the Grey County Crown Attorney, a dietician and dental hygienist from the Health Unit, and a principal from each of the school boards.  Grey Bruce Eat and Learn is funded through the Ministry of Child, Youth and Family and local fund-raising efforts.  Eat and Learn has one employee, Bev Gateman, who acts as the Co-ordinator of Nutrition Programs. Her job is to help maintain and sustain programs, ensure that programs are run within Ministry and Health Unit guidelines, and train program volunteers and co-ordinators as well as promote the programs.

The Grey Bruce Eat and Learn began nine years ago as an amalgamation of Owen Sound Eat and Learn, Walkerton Area Breakfast programs and South East Grey Breakfast Programs.  The Owen Sound Eat and Learn program began fourteen years ago. At the time of amalgamation there were 12 programs.  In the years since, services have expanded to include sixty-six programs throughout the Bruce and Grey area.  Each program offers healthy food choices and is open to every child in the school in which it operates.  The programs look different in each school as they respond to the needs of their community.  Some schools offer snack programs or lunch programs while the majority focus strictly on the breakfast programs.  Volunteers are the backbone of each and every program and many schools have dedicated staff, who volunteer their time and energy to maintain the programs in their schools.

During a recent conference call with a representative from our funding agency, it was apparent that Grey Bruce Eat and Learn has been recognized as an exemplary program within our region.

Today, we welcome Rosanne Gallinger and Bev Gateman and recognize them for the hours they have committed to growing this program into a much needed support for our students.
