Excellence in Education

6th Secondary Regional Technological
Skills Challenge
Friday, March 27, 2009

Over 100 students from Bluewater and Bruce-Grey Catholic District secondary schools showcased their talent and were assessed by 23 industry judges.

Competitions were held simultaneously at four locations – Tommy Holmes VC Armoury, Automotive Services, Georgian College – Carpentry (Team of 2), Culinary Arts, Precision Machining and Small Engine Repair – Salon Sisu School of Hair Styling – Hairstyling, Bruce Technological Skills Training Centre – Electrical and Welding.

Students on the way home shared their experiences with their teacher/coaches and were very proud of what they had achieved.  Paul Messerschmidt, JDSS, indicated they were “wound for sound”.  Students were very appreciative and amazed at the prizes which were carefully selected and appropriate for each competition.

Students have already approached their tech teachers to         sign up for the competitions next year, to ensure they have a chance to compete.  A carpentry student from West Hill thanked an organizing committee member for a great event and indicated he would be back next year.

All students regardless of their score were acknowledged for their participation and received a certificate, t-shirt and a prize.

Students who achieved the top score will now proceed to         the Skills Ontario competitions.  Regional Qualifiers take place April 18, 2009, Georgian College, Barrie Campus.  All Skills Ontario competitions take place at RIM Park, Waterloo, May 5th.  Students who receive a gold medal in certain designated competitions will have the opportunity to attend the National competitions in Calgary this June.

Meetings with judges begin in August in order to revise scopes, written tests, contest designs and confirm locations.  Tech teachers receive a schedule of events and student reservation information in mid-October.   Prizes are purchased throughout the year to get the best possible sale price.

This event would not be possible without the dedication of our teacher/coaches, volunteers, judges and over 50 sponsors.
