EXCELLENCE IN SCHOOLS
•     Vocal music students of Diane Leith, from Egremont Community School, Grey Highlands and John Diefenbaker Secondary Schools, recently performed for the Liberal Rural Caucus meeting held in Collingwood. Prime Minister Jean Cretien, present to hear their performance, shook hands and talked with students after the performance.
•     Kristin Edwards, Grey Highlands Secondary School, Flesherton, has initiated a Bluewater Association of Students' Councils which is meeting regularly to discuss issues of importance to students.
•     Ken Goldspink of Kincardine was recognized for his significant contribution to the Board's "Partnerships in Technological Education" Committee, a volunteer group of dedicated individuals who are committed to improving opportunities for students through technological education.

Appointment of Trustee
A letter from Saugeen Band Council confirmed the appointment of Lester Anoquot as First Nation Trustee representing Saugeen First Nation #29 on The Bluewater District School Board. Paul Martindale administered the Declaration and Oath of Allegiance to Lester Anoquot and welcomed him to the Board.

Paul Martindale administered the Declaration to Kelly Walker, Wiarton D.H.S.and welcomed her to the Board.

Personnel Report
Personnel Report #4 was approved by the Board.

Special Education Advisory Committee
Trustee Appointments:
The Board approved recommendations with respect to the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC):

1.
The Board appoint two trustees to serve as representatives on The Bluewater District School Board Special Education Advisory Committee.
2.
The Board appoint two trustees to serve as alternate representatives on The Bluewater District School Board Special Education Advisory Committee.
3.
The Board send letters to the two Band Councils with trustee representation on The Bluewater District School Board, inviting each council to nominate a representative and alternate to The Bluewater District School Board Special Education Advisory Committee.
Trustee Representatives: Jean Sullivan; Marilyn McComb.
Alternates (2): Jennifer Yenssen (second to be decided).
The first SEAC meeting will be held on Friday, February 20th at 9:30 a.m. at the Markdale Satellite Office. Ten individuals from various Associations or Organizations were appointed as members/alternates of SEAC.

Bluewater Logo Design
The Board approved the Bluewater logo design (Version 2) and authorized the use of the "Pride of Grey Bruce" symbol on Board documents and property where appropriate. The logo design was created by Tom Beirnes, a Grade 10 student at Grey Highlands Secondary School, Flesherton, who was present for the unveilling ceremony.

Board Committees
Board committees that exist or need to exist at present are: Committees of the Whole Board (3), Statutory Committees (4), Committees with Required Trustee Representation (15).

Boundaries
L.E.I.C. Committee recommendations re boundaries approved were:

1.
Numbers 09-97-47 and 09-97-48; and
2.
A committee be established to submit recommendations to the Board for the 1998-99 school year.

Field Trips Approved
•     Saugeen D.S.S. Sr. Band Trip to Boston, Massachusetts, April 24-27, 1998.
•     Wiarton D.H.S. School Concert Band to Waterfall, Pennsylvania, April 22-25, 1998.

Arts Recommendations
Subject to budget and curriculum priorities, the Board approved Arts recommendations (10-97-55 through 10-97-62) from L.E.I.C.

Revenue and Expenses
A report on Revenue and Expenses for the month of January was approved.

Educational Issues Report
The Board received this report and approved two recommendations regarding selection procedures for promotion in each county and continuation of the French Immersion program.

Committee of Non-Union Employees
The Board approved that the Human Resources Department create a committee of non-union employees to review L.E.I.C. Recommendations (#11-97-107 HR through #11-97).

O.S.C.V.I. Progress Report
Doug Cumming presented a progress report on the construction of the new O.S.C.V.I. and the artist's conception of the new auditorium.
