Board Meeting Highlights

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
Paul Martindale brought to the attention of the Board the following outstanding examples of excellence:
•     Saugeen District Royals Hockey Team participated in the All-0ntario Finals.
•     April 2, 1998 Grey County Science Fair at the Lumley Centre in Owen Sound with 213 projects.
•     Eight students from Bluewater participated in the District Public Speaking Finals in Harriston on April 5, 1998.
•     Students in Emerging Careers - JOBS, JOBS, JOBS - Bob Harvey , Kincardine District Secondary School, Marg Murray, Walkerton District Secondary School and Shelley Bellamy, Saugeen District Secondary School, were the major program writers in the development of a curriculum unit entitled JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.

Swearing in of Student Trustee
Robin McGuire, Student Trustee from Bruce Peninsula District School was sworn in at the meeting.

Institute for Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies
The Board has approved the finalization of the plans for the addition and renovations to the Institute and the project will be put to tender.

Personnel Report
Personnel Report #7 was approved by the Board.

Comparison of 1997/98 Elementary and Secondary Class Size
John Lennon presented a report on the comparison of elementary and secondary class size for the District.

Owen Sound Collegiate & Vocational Institute
The Board approved a further allocation of $600,000 to provide a contingency and to enhance the funds for furniture, fixtures and equipment for OSCVI.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy
A policy on Inclusive Language was passed by the Board which reads as follows:
It is the policy of the Bluewater District School Board that all communications, written or spoken, use inclusive language. Employees are to refer to the Inclusive Language Guideline when writing or speaking, when designing display materials, and when fulfilling their work responsibilities, whether communicating with students or with parents and the community.

Business
The Board received the Business Committee Report.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
The Board will be offering the Early Years Program for four year old children (Junior Kindergarten) District-wide with flexible program delivery options beginning September 1998.

Occupational Health and Safety
Occupational Health and Safety The position of management Co-Chair of the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee of the Board will be occupied by a trustee.

Correspondence

Thank you notes from Ontario Scholars, Catherine McLeod, Kincardine District Secondary School and Sandra Lowrie, Chesley District High School.

Education Improvement Commission - advising the Board that the new name Bluewater District School Board has been approved.
3.
Ministry of Education and Training - Aryeh Gitterman - Enclosing a cheque in the amount of $28,000 for our proposal Bluewater Co-operative Community Partnerships under the Implementation Support Initiative for Expansion of Cooperative Education and Work Experience Programs.

Aryeh Gitterman - Enclosing a cheque in the amount of $15,100 support for Implementation of Secondary School Reform Policies.

Veronica Lacey - Enclosing the new Science and Technology Curriculum, Grades 1-8.

David Johnson and Veronica Lacey - Revised school year calendars. Request to Increase the number of of in-class school days in June.

COMMUNICATIONS - STAFF/TRUSTEE
Barry Wolfe/Ted Voelker - indicating the names of the members of the local Collective Bargaining Committee.

Shaping the Future of the Student Trustee Role
Mat Oakes and John Eickmeier presented a report on the role of the student trustee.
