Board Meeting Highlights


April 21, 1998


Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed visitors, student trustees and the Saugeen D.S.S. video crew to the Board meeting.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
Paul Martindale, staff and trustees brought to the attention of the Board the following outstanding examples of excellence:
•     Student Work from Bruce Peninsula District School on display in the Education Centre (April 17 to May 18).
•     Midwestern Ontario Rotary Music Festival - (April 20 - May 2) in Walkerton, ends with a concert on Sat., May 2, at Walkerton D.S.S.
•     Arts Night at Wiarton District H.S. - Trustee, Judy Galoska, reported on the 4th annual Arts Night, which displayed the efforts of the students in a variety of media, held on Friday, April 17. She commended teachers, Pamela McCowan and Harriet Maconaghie for organizing the event.
•     Bruce County Science Fair - David Armstrong stated that the 25th Annual Science Fair was held at the C.A.W. Centre, Port Elgin on April 15. Of 347 projects entered, the following public school students will be competing at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, May 11-15 in Timmins, Ontario: Adrienne and Andrew Mason; Kristen McDermid and Meghan Whitmore (Northport E.S., Port Elgin); Deanna Walker and Tiffany Shearer (Bruce Peninsula D.S., Lion's Head); Caitlin and Sarah Finch (Huron Heights P.S., Kincardine).
•     Roots of Bruce Program - David Armstrong stated that this event, for Bruce County Grade 6 students, was an appropriate example for Volunteer Week as many Bruce County volunteers from the agricultural community, as well as secondary school students from Walkerton D.S.S., were instrumental in the successful presentation of the program over the course of three days April 7-9 in Walkerton.
•     Mary-Beth Lisk and Murray Sinclair - of The Children's Aid Society of Owen Sound and the County of Grey and Principal of Alexandra Community School, Owen Sound, respectively, were recognized on behalf of a committee responsible for the development of the "Programs for Parents" project which began in 1992 in the Owen Sound area. They provided an overview of the project and then Jennifer Yenssen and Paul Martindale presented each of them with a letter of commendation.

REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE BOARD IN CLOSED SESSION
The Board approved, and authorized for signature by officials of the Board, an agreement between the Corporation of the Town of Port Elgin and the Board for pool facilities at Saugeen District Secondary School.
A motion was passed that on April 24, 1998, 154 full-time equivalent teachers be declared surplus to the system.

Received by the Board.

Boundary Committee Report
The following motion was passed:
THAT the present school boundaries remain the same for the school year 1998/99;
THAT the present practice in approving students attending out of boundary schools continue where space is available and there is no additional cost to the Board;
THAT in order to utilize available permanent school facilities as effectively as possible, a complete school boundary study be undertaken for possible implementation in the school year 1999/2000.

Personnel Report
Personnel Report #8 was approved by the Board.

Revenue and Expenses
The Board approved the Revenue and Expenses Report for the three months ending March 31, 1998.

People for Education
A request to distribute a questionnaire, which will provide a baseline for public education, to School Councils for completion was approved. The questionnaire will also be distributed to Home and School Associations.

Notice of Motion (2)
Carolyn Day moved and the Board approved a motion that the Board set aside an appropriate amount of money (up to $150) to compensate teachers who have lost teacher-owned instructional materials through the closing of portables throughout the Board.

Norene Pilkington moved a motion that the board hold one of its regular meetings, once every two months, and the appropriate committee meetings scheduled for that day, in the Markdale Education Centre facility. After discussion, Norene Pilkington agreed that the motion be tabled until the next meeting when information on the cost of this proposal could be presented.
