Board Meeting Highlights

May 05, 1998

Paul Martindale brought to the attention of the Board the following outstanding examples of excellence:
•     The Technology Group Across the Board - David Clayton, Joy Bowler, Tim Noxel, Deb Lembke and Dan Hobler were recognized for the many hours of personal time they dedicated to planning, problem solving and providing extensive support to schools on the electronic version of the Provincial Report Card.
•     Public Speaking - Adam Matheson, Bruce Peninsula District School and Caitlin Finch, Huron Heights Public School, were recognized for being First Place winners in the Junior and Senior Divisions respectively of the Bruce County Public Speaking Competition.

$5,000 Contribution to the Town of Kincardine
The Board approved a motion to contribute $5,000 to the Town of Kincardine towards the cost of upgrading the track at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, subject to an appropriate renewal of th agreement for use of the facility.

85 Factor and Retirement Gratuity
The Board approved a motion that the Bruce County Teaching Federations be informed of the willingness of the Board to modify retirement gratuity eligibility to "10 years of consecutive employment and receiving a pension immediately upon retirement" within the existing collective agreements and prior to ratification of new agreements.

Personnel Report
Personnel Report #9 was approved by the Board.

Approval of Financial Statements
The Board approved the Financial Statements for the former Bruce County of Education and the former Grey County Board of Education for the year ended December 31, 1997 and received the Auditors' Reports.

School Year Calendar
The Board approved the school year calendar for 1998-99 such that instruction will begin on September 8, 1998 and the school year will end on June 30, 1999.

Junior Kindergarten - September 1998
Junior Kindergarten will be offered in 22 schools in Grey County in September 1998.

Annual Review of Special Education Plans
The Board approved the submission of the response to the Ministry of Education and Training regarding the process for developing Bluewater District's Special Education Plan.

Board Meetings in Markdale
The motion that Board Meetings and Committee Meetings be held in Markdale once every two months was defeated.

Board received the report from the Policy Committee.
Educational Issues
The Board received the Educational Issues Committee Report.
Strategic Planning
Carolyn Day gave an update of the process for strategic planning . It is expected that a final report related to the Strategic Plan will come to Board in December.
Outdoor Education
Ken Mann updated the Board on the building project at the Institute for Environmental Education and Outdoor Education. The completion date for this project will be September 2000.

a) School Board Restructuring Program, Phase 2
b) Theme for Education Week 1998 - May 4 - 8 "Education - Passport to Hope, Opportunity, Jobs and Growth".

Janet Glasspool and David Armstrong stated that a Retirement Celebration was being planned for and tentatively scheduled for June 24, 1998 at the Bayshore Community Centre from 4 p.m. 6 p.m.

Statements Made by the Premier
Gary Lewis reported on inaccurate comments which were made by the Premier on his recent visit to Owen Sound. It was agreed that accurate information would be sent to local newspapers and school councils.

Conferences/Conventions/Out-of-County Meetings
Judy Galoska presented a report on the recent OPSBA meeting. The issue of increasing membership fees was referred to the Business Department.
