Board Meeting Highlights


June 02, 1998


Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, thanked Principal, Joan Fullerton, staff and students at the Georgian Bay Secondary School for hosting the Board Meeting.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
•     Partnerships with the Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Health Unit - Sue Shular and Carol Campbell from the Health Unit were presented with letters of commendation and certificates of excellence for their involvement in the Moving On Program, the Diffusion Project and the Action Program.
•     Public Speaking - Jennie Aitken, Egremont Community School and Jean-Francois Giroux, St. Vincent Euphrasia Community School, were recognized for their public speaking accomplish-ments. Jennie was the winner of the Federation of Agriculture contest and Jean-Francois Giroux was the winner of the Concours French contest. Jean-Francois presented his speech to the Board.

Policy Committee
The Board passed a motion to solicit school and School Council input about community partnerships related to student smoking. The Policy Committee Report was received by the Board.

Business Committee
Business Committee Option #1 contained in the Core French Report was approved for the school year 1998-99 with a view to moving to expansion of the program for the Bluewater District School Board for the year 1999-2000 pending adequate funding.
The 1998 stub year budget in the amount of $97,577,184 was approved.
The Board approved the motion to support the Ontario Public School Boards' Association.
The Business Committee Report was received by the Board.

Educational Issues
Doug Cumming updated the Board on two recent meetings he had attended. He stated that his advisory group from the region encouraged the Ministry to identify key educators using the resource of the regional group to advise on implementation plans for professional development activities for all staff in boards from across the province.

Science and Technology
Four members of the Science and Technology Implementation Team made a presentation to the Board on the new Science and Technology Curriculum.

Kindergarten Program
Mary Anne Alton outlined the new Kindergarten Program document which is the first new curriculum document for Kindergarten in many years.

Personnel Report
Personnel Report # 11 was approved by the Board. Lennon stated that 53.5 F.T.E. surplus elementary teachers will be recalled. In the secondary panel, 13.69 F.T.E. teachers remain surplus to the District.
1.      Education Improvement Commission regarding Restructuring Fund was received.
2.      Ministry of Education and Training:
a)      Investment in Classroom Learning Materials referred to Curriculum Department.
b)      Tutors in the Classroom
c)      Information Session for School Council Chairs
d)      Chesley District High School Official Opening
3.      Class of Night School, "Computer Application" 1998.
4.      Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board re appointment of Vernon Batte as Director
5.      Prime Minister Jean Chretien notification of winners for the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence.
6.      Office of the Lieutenant Governor First Connection initiative.

Announcements
Trustee Judy Galoska suggested that regular meetings be held with Federation and Union Representatives in order to keep the lines of communication open. This suggestion was referred to the Labour Relations Committee.
