Board Meeting Highlights


June 16, 1998


Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed visitors and the Audio-Visual Technicians from the Education Centre acting as video crew for the Board meeting. She stated that due to examinations none of the student trustees could attend the meeting today.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
•     A thank you for the many years of service on behalf of the Bluewater Board to the 163 retirees from the Board. •     This year's West Hill Secondary School Year Book, "Blue Chips", has been selected by the Canada-wide publisher, Friesan Publishing, as the "Best High School Year Book in Canada".
•     Rick Galbraith, Principal, Macphail Elementary School introduced Blaine Horsley, teacher at Macphail E.S., Flesherton, who was nominated and selected to receive the Harry Leatham Award for his dedication to the Flesherton Hills nature area.
•     The Saugeen District Secondary School Senior Band has won the International Honour of being declared champion Band in all of North America with a mark of 94%.
•     The new newsletter of the Bluewater Board, "Beyond the Horizon", will be delivered on June 20 and 21 to households in Bruce and Grey County.
•     Andrew Dinsmore - Mary Anne Alton read a poem by Sandra Pyatt, Andrew's Educational Assistant, entitled "For Special Friends". She introduced Andrew; his mother and father, Kelly and Scott Dinsmore; teacher, Kathy Wright and Educational Assistant, Sandra Pyatt.The trustees viewed a CBC television story made about Andrew called "Moving On", which illustrates the saying "It takes a Village to Raise a Child". The Chair and Director presented Certificates of Excellence to Andrew, his teacher and educational assistant and a Letter of Recognition to Andrew.
•     Administrative Procedure - Excellence in Education.  Janet Glasspool presented an Administrative Procedure related to the Excellence in Education section of the Board meeting and stated that there is a new form for nominations.

BUSINESS ARISING
Environmental Awareness Week Activities - Warren Hoshizaki presented a report containing a summary of activities in the Bluewater schools.

DELEGATION
Ani Eby acted as spokesperson for a delegation expressing support for a broad-based music program in the schools. The Board will provide a response to the questions of the delegation.

COMMITTEE-OF-THE-WHOLE - CLOSED SESSION
Ron Motz reported on the following highlights:
•     Approval of 1998 Facilities Renewal Projects.•     Supervisory Officer Retirements effective December 31, 1998: Doug Cumming, Gary Lewis, Ken Mann, Sharon Ribey.
•     Bruce County School Bus Transportation Rate from September 2, 1997 to August 31, 1998.
•     Approve the transfer of Assets and Liabilities ($700,000) to District School Board #58 (French Language Board) on or before December 31, 1998.•     New Media Release announcing the placements of Elementary and Secondary School Principals and Vice-Principals for the 1998/99 school year.•     Announcement - Markdale Satellite Office to be sold and consolidation of central administrative staff in Chesley location.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES REPORT
•     Further meetings to discuss locations and grade levels for the extension of the French Immersion program.•     Field Trips Approved: Grey Highlands S.S. - Outdoor Club Annual Canoe Trip (June 21-30, 1998) Kincardine D.S.S. - Washington, D.C. (Oct. 6-9, 1998)•     Bluewater District School Board School Improvement Process and approval of School Action Plan.
Policy Committee
The following motions were passed:
•     Office Support - Schools: basic complement of 1.0 F.T.E. Office Professional for each school building.•     Smoke Free Environment for all staff, students and visitors.
•     School Boundaries.•     Approval of Bluewater District School Board By-Laws.
Joint Occupational Health and Safety
Reports No. 1 and 2 were reviewed. Ron Motz highlighted several topics of discussion: emergency procedures during a power outage and Air Quality in Portable Classrooms.

OSCVI REPORT
The Architect for the project presented a scale model of the site and answered questions. A joint management structure (committee) will oversee community use of the new OSCVI auditorium. This Committee will report to the Board.

BOUNDARY REVIEW PROCESS
Approval of the Boundary Review Process.

Regular Board Meetings in September: September 8, and September 22, 1998.
