Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed guests and the Audio-Visual Technicians from Walkerton District Secondary School.
OATH OF ALLEGIANCE - STUDENT TRUSTEE
Janet Glasspool administered the Declaration to student trustee Peter Ramsay from Walkerton District Secondary School who attended his first Board meeting.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
•     International Exchanges in Bluewater Schools - James Cochlin, Regional Associate of the Canadian Education Exchange Foundation; Susanna Everingham, Bruce County Exchange Co-ordinator, a group of students participating in the exchange program and parents attended the Board Meeting. They thanked the Board for its support of this program and described their exchange experiences. James Cochlin and Susanna Everingham were presented with a letter of commendation and lapel pin of excellence. The students also received a lapel pin of excellence.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy Committee
The Board approved the policy relating to Student Trustees. Student trustees had reviewed the policy and the issue of representation. A student trustee will be appointed from each of the First Nations served by Bluewater District School Board, namely Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash First Nation.

Business
The preliminary Revenue and Expenses Report for the eight months ending August 31, 1998 was approved.
In order to install a sidewalk on the south side of Elora Street in Teeswater, the Board approved the necessary transfer of property to the County of Bruce.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
Open Court Pilot Project Presentation Alison McInnes, Speech-Language Pathologist; Liz MacPherson, Vice-Principal, Bruce Township Central School and Karen Moss, Vice-Principal, Port Elgin-Saugeen Central School presented the results of educational research on literacy programs.

STAFF REPORTS
•     Banking Services
The Board approved banking resolutions with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

CORRESPONDENCE
•     Ministry of Education and Training - The Board received a letter from Veronica Lacey, Deputy Minister of Education advising that funding for transportation for the 1998-99 school year will be increased by 3.7%.
Ken Mann stated that because of the mitigation factor, funding to Bluewater District School Board could not be increased. Therefore, the benefit to our Board is nil.
