Board Meeting Highlights

December 01, 1998

Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed the video crew and music ensemble from Walkerton District Secondary School.

•     Election of the Chair
Jennifer Yenssen was acclaimed to the position of Chair of the Board.
•     Election of the Vice-Chair
Ron Motz was acclaimed to the position of Vice-Chair of the Board.

Janet Glasspool administered the Declaration to Natasha Jones, student trustee representing Cape Croker First Nation, who attended her first Board meeting.

Under the direction of teacher/conductor Ron Code, a music ensemble from Walkerton District Secondary School performed Christmas music for the Board.

Reports from Committee-of-the-Whole in Closed Session
•     Boundary Committee
The Board announced its decisions regarding the Lion’s Head Public School property owned by the Board. The property will be declared surplus to the needs of the Board and will be offered for sale to those parties listed in part three of Ontario Regulation 444/98.
•     Superintendent of Secondary Education
The Board will engage in a province-wide search for a Superintendent of Secondary Education.
•     Business
The Board approved the 1998-99 budget in the amount of $156,179,409.

•     Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
Superintendent David Armstrong and Co-op Education Teacher, Tim Mancell from Walkerton District Secondary School, presented information on a joint proposal to the Ministry of Education and Training. The project includes a number of local partners. If approved, this apprenticeship program will have students from all secondary schools working through comprehensive co-operative education programs at their home schools in partnership with local business and industry.
•     Secondary School Reform
Doug Cumming and Warren Hoshizaki provided information recently received from the Ministry of Education and Training including examples of Grade 9 course of study descriptions, a draft of the Provincial Report Card and an information brochure for parents of students who will enter grade 9 in September 1999.
•     Field Trip - Grey Highlands Secondary School
The Board approved the Grey Highlands Secondary School student canoe trip to Temagami from June 3 - 18, 1999.

•     School Board Restructuring Fund
The Board approved an application to the Ministry of Education and Training for the Communication Technology and Information Services Projects.

•     Ministry of Community and Social Services - regarding alternative school programming and an offer of support by committing to have one Probation Officer involved for one half day per week.
•     Education Improvement Commission - cover letter received with The Road Ahead III - A Report on the Role of School Councils.

•     Resignation - Native Trustee, Isabel Millette, has resigned from the Board effective December 31, 1998.
•     Establishment of Committee
Carolyn Day and Judy Galoska were appointed to the Selection Committee for the Superintendent of Secondary Education.
