Board Meeting Highlights

January 19, 1999

•     An outstanding display of artwork from Kincardine District Secondary School, Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School, W.E. Thompson Public School, Elgin Market Public School, Ripley-Huron Community School is currently on display at the Education Centre in Chesley. Director Janet Glasspool commented particularly on the paintings and sculptures from Kincardine District Secondary School.
•     Electronic Provincial Report Card - Members of the District Provincial Report Card Training team and school computer administrators were recognized as a valuable resource in the implementation of the electronic report card. Ninety-nine per cent of teachers used the electronic report card for reporting to parents in December 1998.
•     Charitable Efforts in Bluewater Schools - Staff, students and communities were recognized for their spirit of giving over the Christmas season. Relief efforts in support of the victims of Hurricane Mitch, fundraising for the Women’s Shelter, donations to the food banks and Christmas toy drives were just a few of the many generous acts.

Swearing of Declaration and Oath of Allegiance by First Nation Trustee Patrick Nadjiwon was sworn in as Trustee representing the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation.

Reports from Committee-of-the-Whole in Closed Session
•     The Memorandum of Settlement between the Canadian Union of Public Employees - Local 1176 and the Bluewater District School Board for the period January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2000 was ratified.
•     Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board will be advised that Bluewater District School Board has no interest in acquiring the former schools in Ayton and Deemerton.
•     A June 16, 1998 Board resolution relating to the membership of the OSCVI Auditorium Joint Management Committee was rescinded. The Board passed a resolution approving a revised organization and mandate.

OSCVI Transition Committee Report
The Auditorium Fundraising Committee has raised approximately $250,000 to date. An Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute website is now available for viewing. The address is:

•     School Trip - Grey Highlands S.S.
A trip to Paris, France from March 29 - April 6, 1999 was approved for students enrolled in a French as a Second Language or French Immersion course at Grey Highlands Secondary School.
•     Ontario Curriculum Implementation & In-Service
A calendar outlining the Ontario Curriculum Implementation was presented. Audrey Smith, Program Supervisor; Doug Goar, Principal, G.C. Huston Public School and Sylvia Siitam-Ciarallo, St. Vincent-Euphrasia Elementary School, provided a personal perspective on curriculum in-service.

E.I.C. - The Education Improvement Commission has released their first Annual Report.
