Board Meeting Highlights

Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed guests, media and the Chesley District High School video crew to the Board meeting.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
•     Keystone Science School - Doug Karrow, teacher at James A. Magee Community School, shared with the Board his experiences relating to a program at the Keystone Science School in Silverthorne, Colorado. Jennifer Yenssen and Janet Glasspool thanked Doug for his presentation and presented him with a Bluewater lapel pin.
•     Project Overseas 1999-2000 - Jenjy Hanko, teacher at Saugeen District Secondary School, was recognized for being one of seven OSSTF members who has been selected to participate in Project Overseas. Her assignment will be in Malawi during July and August 1999.
•     Marion Drysdale Awards - Patricia Trudell, student at Grey Highlands Secondary School, was recognized for being a regional winner in the painting/sculpture category.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Reports from Committee-of-the-Whole in Closed Session
•     The Board approved the appointment of John Laverty as the Superintendent of Secondary Education, effective March 1, 1999.•     The Board will engage the services of a realtor to assess the marketability of the Markdale building.
•     The Board reaffirmed its intent to demolish the old OSCVI building and level and grass the existing site as interim parkland until such time as an appropriate usage of the site can be determined.
Policy Committee Report

Business Committee Report
The Board authorized staff to complete the energy management program in all schools that have not had energy program retrofits applied at an estimated cost of $2,740,000 with related financing not to exceed 11 years.

Special Education Advisory Committee
Lynda Legge was appointed as a member and Corrine Wolsey as an alternate member of the Special Education Advisory Committee for the term of the current Board. They will represent Bluewater Council of Home & School Associations.

STAFF REPORTS
•     “Common Understandings” Resource Guide Report - Janice Greenwood, Vice-Principal at Sydenham Community School, presented an overview of the Common Understandings Resource Guide. This guide was created in response to a community need and a request by the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario - Grey Owen Sound Satellite Group.
•     Average Class Size Report - A report on class size was presented to the Board. The report indicates that the average elementary class size is 24.98 and the average secondary class size is 21.5.
•     School Year Calendar - Y2K Implications Report A proposal for an alternate calendar was defeated by the Board. There was consensus in favour of the traditional Christmas break (December 20 - 31) for the 1999-2000 school year calendar.
•     OSCVI Auditorium Joint Management Committee - The Board defeated the motion requesting that the topic of the OSCVI Auditorium Joint Management Committee be reconsidered.
•     OSCVI Auditorium Fundraising - The Board agreed to waive the policy and practice regarding the provision of alcoholic beverages on or in any Board owned facility or property for a one-time OSCVI event after the school program is completed at the end of June 1999.

CORRESPONDENCE
•     O.P.S.B.A. - Laidlaw Scholarship Winners - At the recent OPSBA Conference, Trustee Judy Galoska received a $1,000 Laidlaw Scholarship to be awarded to a secondary student entering the first year of a post secondary education program in the technical area.
•     Rural Youth Jobs Strategy - The Board will receive funding in the amount of $19,200 for the Rural Youth Jobs Strategy - Transportation Assistance for Co-operative Education.
