Board Meeting Highlights

Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed guests and the Walkerton District Secondary School video crew to the Board meeting.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
•     Historic Academic Award - Janet Glasspool recognized Clive Thompson, a graduate of Chesley District High School, for his achievement of being named a Knight in the Order of Academic Palms for his support of francophone culture and collaborative projects with French research groups. This award was created by Napoleon Bonaparte more than 190 years ago.
•     Early Literacy JK/SK - Bobbie Harris, teacher at Alexandra Community School, and Barbara Misener, teacher at Amabel-Sauble Community School, shared information with the Board regarding the Jolly Phonics literacy program they are using in their Early Years classes. Both Bobbie and Barbara are recognized throughout the system for the system leadership they are providing to their colleagues. Jennifer Yenssen and Janet Glasspool presented Bobbie and Barbara with a Bluewater lapel pin of excellence.
•     MOVIN' ON Program - Bill Colley, teacher at Northport Elementary School, and Dave Bertrand, teacher at Paisley Central School, provided information on a program they developed entitled MOVIN’ ON. This program tackles the problem of mediocre fitness levels in school-aged children. This year, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Grey/Bruce awarded one of their annual awards to Bill and Dave for their commitment, innovation and the impact this program is having on young people. Jennifer Yenssen and Janet Glasspool thanked Bill and Dave for their presentation and presented them with a Bluewater lapel pin of excellence.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy Committee Report

Business Committee Report
The Board approved four recommendations regarding the solicitation of a fundraising consultant, including initiating a Request for Proposal process for Professional Fundraising Services for the Inspired by Nature Campaign.

School Accommodation
Ten recommendations from the School Accommodation Review Committee were approved. The recommendations included a motion that the Board adopt a board-wide process for the orderly elimination of portable classrooms and that the Board direct staff to remove or relocate eight portable classrooms prior to September 1, 1999.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
The following five field trips were approved by the Board:
•     Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute - trip to Killarney Provincial Park, May 8 - 12, 1999.
•     Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute - trip to Spain, France, Italy and Greece from June 29 - July 19, 1999.•     Wiarton District High School - trip to Westfield, New York from April 14 - 17, 1999. West Hill Secondary School - trip to Manchester, England and Edinburgh, Scotland from April 20 - 30, 2000.
•     Chesley District High School - trip to Boston, Massachusetts from May 5 - 9, 1999.
STAFF REPORTS
Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession - Michelle Forge, Superintendent of Student Services, gave an overview of a draft document recently released by the Ontario College of Teachers entitled “Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession."

CORRESPONDENCE
•     Owen Sound Fire Department - Tom Potter, Captain, Fire Prevention Officer, commented positively on the new OSCVI and the outstanding job done by Project Supervisor, Marcel Martin.
•     Minister of Education and Training - Jennifer Yenssen has sent a letter to David Johnson, Minister of Education and Training regarding school boundary/accommodation issues.
