Board Meeting Highlights

Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed guests, media and the video crew from Chesley District High School to the Board meeting.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
•     Outstanding Artwork from Macphail Memorial Elementary School, Beavercrest Community School and Grey Highlands Secondary School currently on display at the Education Centre was recognized.
•     Chesley District High School Alcohol and Drug Awareness Initiative - Several members of the Chesley District High School “My Future...My Choice” Committee were recognized for their work in raising awareness in the school and in the community about making positive life choices on issues related to alcohol and other drugs.
•     Partners in Speech and Language Services - Speech Pathologists Alison McInnes and Donna Torrie, from Bluewater District School Board, and Rebecca Lee and Nikki Otterbein from the Grey-Bruce Community Care Access Centre were recognized for their partnership in providing speech and language services. The partnership focuses on providing school staff and their students with a full range of service options.

Reports from the Committee of the Whole in Closed Session
A report on Secondary Principal - Vice-Principal staffing was presented. John Smith will be the Principal of Grey Highlands Secondary School effective June 1, 1999 and Blair Hilts will be the Vice-Principal of West Hill Secondary School, effective September, 1999.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy Committee Report
The Board approved the following policies:

Information Technology Restructuring
The Board received a report regarding Information Technology Restructuring.

Special Education Advisory Committee
The Board appointed Sandy Ribey as a member of the Special Education Advisory Committee for the term of the current Board. Sandy will represent the Head Injury Association Grey Bruce.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
•     Core French Program
The Board approved a Core French Program based on the new Ontario Curriculum for Grades 4-8 with 40 minutes of instruction per day. A Core French program which integrates Language, the Arts and other elements of the Ontario Curriculum for Grades 1 - 3 with an average of 20 minutes of instruction per day was approved. The implementation of the Core French Program in Bruce County elementary schools will be Grade 1 - September 1999, Grade 2 - September 2000 and Grade 3 - September 2001. The Board approved a plan to assess and upgrade the resources and program for all Core French programs Grades 1 - 8 during 1999-2000.
•     Field Trip
The Board approved a sailing trip from Toronto to Montreal for students at Strathcona Senior Public School and Hillcrest Elementary School.

STAFF REPORTS
•     School Year Calendar
A School Year Calendar for 1999-2000 was approved.
•     Deferred Salary Leave Plan
The Board approved the participation of several elementary and secondary teaching staff members in the Deferred Salary Leave Plan.

CORRESPONDENCE
•     Science Fair - The first Bluewater Regional Science and Technology Fair was held on April 8 for Senior Division students and on April 15 for Junior Division students. Winners will be participating in the Canada-wide Science and Technology Fair in Edmonton.
•     Ministry of Education and Training - A letter advised that the Board’s submission for a grant to assist our Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program was successful.
•     Education Improvement Commission - The EIC is in the process of reviewing school boards. The Bluewater District School Board review is scheduled for May 26 and 27, 1999.
