Board Meeting Highlights

May 18, 1999

Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed guests, media and the video crew from Walkerton District Secondary School to the Board meeting.

•     Public Speaking - Students Lisa Grant from Hillcrest Central School; A.C. from Meaford Community School and Nate Jones from Macphail Elementary School were recognized for their achievements in public speaking contests. Lisa, A.C. and Nate shared their speeches with the Board.
•     Occupational Health and Safety Award - Both the Board and Archie Pantelmann, Occupational Health and Safety Officer were recognized with plaques by the Education Safety Association of Ontario for contributions to Health & Safety in Education throughout the Province of Ontario. Janet Glasspool presented the plaque to the Board and Jennifer Yenssen presented the plaque to Archie Pantelmann.
•     The Mentor Program at Walkerton District Secondary School - The Mentor Program is sponsored by the Walkerton Human Resources Centre and implemented by the Walkerton District Literacy Council and offered in all Walkerton schools. Several staff members and students involved in this pilot project were recognized for assisting at-risk students.

A report on placement of elementary principals and vice-principals for September 1, 1999 was presented.

•     Summer School
The Board approved the Summer School 1999 program along with the organizational plan.
•     Design & Technology/Family Studies Programs
The Board approved a program that will allow each Family of Schools and the schools that currently provide these programs to:
-       Serve one intermediate grade in a dedicated program (150 minutes every two weeks)
-       implement a resource program in the other intermediate grade delivery model.
-       Consult with the Elementary Teachers Federation regarding the sharing of resource time.
-       Complete a program evaluation by April 2000.
•     Special Education Plan
The Board approved the Special Education Plan.
•     Special Education Advisory Committee
The Board appointed Angela Corrigan as an alternate member of the Special Education Advisory Committee for the term of the current Board. She will represent the Grey Owen Sound Satellite of the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario.

•     Grade 3 & 6 EQAO Assessment
The Board received a report on Grade 3 & 6 EQAO Assessment. All Grade 3 and 6 students in Bluewater will be taking part in a five-day Education Quality and Accountability Office assessment in reading, writing and mathematics between May 10 and May 28. The theme for grade 3 is “Change” and the Grade 6 theme is “Perspective”. Results of student achievement will be reported in the fall. The results will provide the basis for system decisions to strengthen teacher practice and to measure and improve student learning.

•     Field Trip
The Board approved the Owen Sound Collegiate & Vocational Institute trip to Algonquin Park from June 3 - 14, 1999.
