Board Meeting Highlights

September 21, 1999

Jennifer Yenssen, Chair, welcomed student trustees, guests, media and the video crew from Kincardine District Secondary School, to the Board meeting. Cathy Thomson, Principal of Kincardine District Secondary School, welcomed all guests to the school.

Janet Glasspool administered the Declaration to student trustees James Scongack representing Saugeen District Secondary School;
Ian Keir representing Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute;
Janet Wright representing Chesley District High School;
Alex Doherty representing Georgian Bay Secondary School;
Nicole Mancell representing Walkerton District Secondary School;
Tom McAfee representing Bruce Peninsula District School;
James McRae representing West Hill Secondary School;
Peter Braul representing Kincardine District Secondary School;
Adam Waugh and David Galoska representing Wiarton District High School and
Olena Dingeldein representing Grey Highlands Secondary School.

•     Education Improvement Commission Review
Janet Glasspool, Jennifer Yenssen, other senior staff and former student trustee, Peter Ramsay highlighted major successes of Bluewater District School Board which were identified in the report of the Education Improvement Commission. The Commission reviewed the Board amalgamation process from January 1998 to the present.

Reports from the Committee of the Whole in Closed Session
The Board approved the revisions to the bus operators' agreement.

OSCVI Auditorium Fund Raising and Transfer of Funds
The Board recognized the OSCVI Regional Auditorium Fundraising Committee for the donation of the first cheque in the amount of $120,000. toward their fundraising goal.

Policy Committee
The Board approved the following policies:

Literacy Plan
Mary Anne Alton reported on the 1999-2000 Literacy Plan including highlights and a calendar of events for the year.

Field Trip
The Board approved a field trip for Kincardine District Secondary School Art History students to travel to Italy and France from March 9 - 21, 2000.

Co-operative Education Partnerships
Shelley Bellamy, Saugeen District Secondary School, shared information on a program which supported developmental and at-risk students at Saugeen District Secondary School and John Diefenbaker Secondary School. Students learned what was required to succeed in the world of work. Their confidence, job skills and résumés all grew as a result of the program.

Maple Leaf Job Action Partnership
Maureen Schmidt, Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) and Jim Kent, Maple Leaf Job Action Committee, shared information on a partnership among Bluewater District School Board, HRDC and Maple Leaf employees. This program resulted in upgraded education for many individuals. All parties are extremely pleased with the success of the program and hope to continue to work together in the future.

Student Enrolment Report
The Board received an enrolment data report as of September 10, 1999 which showed an enrolment decline of 617.69 full-time equivalent students over last year.
