Board Meeting Highlights

January 23, 2001

Bluewater Technology Centre
Leigh Butler, principal and Rob Davidson, teacher, provided information on the Bluewater Technology Program and highlighted curriculum expectations that form the basis of the technology program.

Homework Club – Beavercrest Community School
Myrt Heinrich, principal and Joan Bain, community coordinator, were recognized for their roles in establishing a Homework Club in Markdale.

Policy Committee
The Board approved a travel rate of 35 cents per kilometre to become effective on February 1, 2001.

Educational Issues Committee
The Board approved the 40-Hour Community Service Activities list which adds to activities listed in the Bluewater Secondary Community Involvement Guidelines as required by the Ministry of Education.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
Barbara Wright, co-ordinator and Darlene Boisvenue-Lortie from the Apprenticeship Branch of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities presented information on the involvement of the Board in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.

Field Trip Requests
The Board approved the following field trips:
-       a trip to New Orleans for Grey Highlands Secondary School students from April 16 – 22, 2001
-       a trip to New York for Chesley District High School students from May 2 – 6, 2001
-       a trip to Amsterdam for Military Co-op students from March 8 – 18, 2001

Average Class Size Report
A report on average class sizes in both elementary and secondary schools was presented. The average class size for elementary schools is 24.43. The average class size for secondary schools is 20.85.

Bruce-Grey Public Education Foundation
Ron Motz was appointed to take a seat on the Board of Directors for the Bruce-Grey Public Education Foundation.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
The Board received notification that its submission for a grant to support the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program was approved.

Chippewas of Nawash
The Board received notification of the resignation of Patrick Nadjiwon as the Native Trustee representing the Chippewas of Nawash and the election of Eric Johnston as his replacement.

Resignation of Trustee
The Board accepted, with regret, the resignation of Janice McKean, trustee representing the Municipality of Kincardine and the Township of Huron-Kinloss.
