Board Meeting Highlights


January 22, 2002


RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE
Creation of Cross-Platform CD of Literacy Exercises for Use by Grade Nine and Ten Technology Classes
David Hocking, Principal, John Diefenbaker Secondary School, introduced Gail Pletsch, Curriculum Leader at JDSS.  She outlined how she facilitated a collaborative effort among JDSS technology teachers to create the CD. The resulting CD is hosted on the school Internet, a copy has been distributed to every secondary school in Bluewater DSB, and the PDF files are ready to be shared on Bluewater DSB web site and beyond. She outlined how the teachers and students were using the CD to improve literacy skills.

The Board recognized Gail as an exemplary role model of lifelong learning, professional development, and the proper use of technology. The Chair and Director congratulated Gail Pletsch and David Hocking and presented them with the Board’s Lapel Pin of Excellence.

REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE IN CLOSED SESSION
Judy Galoska, Chair, stated that she was bringing forward two motions from COTW Closed Session.

Motion from December 18, 2001
The Board rejected the Settlement with Secondary Occasional Teachers, OSSTF.

Motion from January 22, 2002 re Vice-Principal Appointments
The Board approved the following appointments:
Bernice Payne is assigned Vice-Principal at O.S.C.V.I. effective February 4, 2002.
Ken Burr is assigned to Kincardine District Secondary School as Acting Vice-Principal for the period of February 1, 2002 until
June 11, 2002.
That a person to be determined by the System Administrative Team be assigned Vice-Principal at Grey Highlands Secondary
School effective February 4, 2002.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy Committee
The Board received the Policy Committee Report of a meeting held December 18, 2001. The Committee endorsed two policies: BP 3501-D Purchasing and BP 3801-D Health and Safety. The Policy on Field Trips was tabled until the next Policy Committee meeting.

Educational Issues Committee
The Board received the Educational Issues Committee report of a meeting held January 8, 2002. The Committee received the
following reports: Bluewater Adult Satellite School – BASS, Secondary School Reform, Secondary School Extra-Curricular
Activities Report.

Business Committee
The Board received the Business Committee report of a meeting held January 8, 2002. The Committee received a report on the 2002-2001 Financial Statements.

Joint Health and Safety Committee Report
The Board received the December 13, 2001, Report, including the Minutes of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
Grade 9 Mathematics Results
The Board received a report on the Grade 9 Mathematics Results received from EQAO. John Laverty stated that the Board is required to develop an action plan to address gaps in program and make recommendations. A committee, lead by Charlie Bell, and consisting of secondary school principals, teachers and curriculum leaders will begin this task.

Field Trip Request – Grey Highlands Secondary School
The Board approved the Grey Highlands Secondary School Temagami Canoe Trip from June 5-14, 2002.

STAFF REPORTS
Auditors’ Report
The Board received the Auditors’ Report and Financial Statements for the period September 1, 2000 to August 31, 2001, presented by Peter Thor, BDO Dunwoody.

40 Hour Community Service Activities
The Board approved a revised list that included additional 40 Hour Community Service Activities at Chesley District High School, Georgian Bay Secondary School and Kincardine District Secondary School.
