Board Meeting Highlights


March 19, 2002


RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE
Meaford Community School – Literacy Celebration Week Michelle Forge welcomed principal, Rick Galbraith, teacher, Leslea Clarke and two students, Eve Cameron and James Roussain from the school, as well as writer, Andrew Cox, who participated in the Literacy Celebration Week held February 11-15 and expressed their observations about the week. The following activities were held during the week:
Monday – Grandparent’s Day where grandparents were invited to come in and read a favourite book or talk about reading when they were in school.
Tuesday and Wednesday – school-wide DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) times where the entire school, including office staff and administration took 15 minutes to just read.
Thursday – “dress up as your favourite character from a book” day.
Friday – “Guest Author’s, Writer’s Day” where seven authors/storytellers/writers presented 40-minute workshops to the students.
The Chair, Director and Trustee, Jean Sullivan, presented them with the Board’s Lapel Pin of Excellence.

REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE
Letter of Agreement with District 7 Secondary Occasional Teachers
The Board supported the Letter of Agreement with District 7 Secondary Occasional Teachers.

Short-Term Hiring of Experienced Secondary School Administrator
The Board approved the short-term hiring of an experienced secondary school administrator to provide support for secondary schools until the end of the current school year.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy Committee Report
The Board received the Policy Committee Report of a meeting held February 19, 2002. Listed below are the policies considered and action taken:
•     BP 3402-D “Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment – Disposal”
- referred for Administrative Review.
•     BP 5690-D “Private Music Instruction to Day SchoolStudents” - referred for Administrative Review.
The Committee reviewed the Cyclical Review of Policies Chart and requested that it be forwarded to School Community Councils for information.

Educational Issues Committee Report
The Board received the Educational Issues Committee report of a meeting held March 5, 2002. The Committee had received the
following reports: French Immersion Program Promotion, After School Literacy, Secondary School

Reform Update, Promoting Early Intervention Project (Demonstation sites at Beaver Valley Community, Elderslie Central, G.C. Huston Public and Victoria Public schools.)

Business Committee Report
The Board received the Business Committee report of a meeting held March 5, 2002, which included: Regulation 505:
Well Water Regulation, Tentative 2002/2003 Budget Schedule,
Update: Beaver Valley Renovations.

Joint Health and Safety Committee Report
The Board received the February 6, 2002 Report, including the Minutes of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
Field Trip Requests
The Board approved the following field trips:
•     Georgian Bay Secondary School – Music Trip to Chicago from May 30 to June 2, 2002
•     Grey Highlands Secondary School (Grades 9-OAC students) – Ohio Rugby Classic Tournament from April 12-14, 2002•     Kincardine District Secondary School - (Grades 9-OAC students) – Ohio Rugby Classic Tournament from April 12-14, 2002

Early Reading Strategy Spring Conference
Mary Anne Alton reported on an upcoming provincial conference (March 25-27), “Target Setting: Effective Uses of School Data” to assist boards in gaining better understanding of how to use and analyze EQAO and school data to inform target setting.

STAFF REPORTS
Banking Resolutions
On an annual basis the Board is required to update resolutions for banking on file with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. There were no changes from the previous year and the Board approved the banking resolutions.

COMMUNICATIONS
Correspondence
Trustee Margaret Reidl informed the Board that she is moving out of the District and that she will be relinquishing her position as trustee for Bluewater District School Board effective April 22, 2002. Trustees expressed their regrets and best wishes.
