RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE
Grey Bruce Clean Water Festival
Mary Anne Alton introduced Clive Card, Craig Todd (Chair) and Debbie Fawcett (Coordinator), members of the Grey Bruce Clean Water Festival Steering Committee. They spoke on behalf of the Steering Committee which represents eighteen regional organizations, including Bluewater DSB.  They provided information and showed a film clip made by a Bluewater secondary school student on the first Grey Bruce Clean Water Festival that took place in Chesley at the Community Centre Complex during the week of September 24-27, 2001.

The Festival culminated in fifty-eight public, Catholic and private schools sending 2,153 grade four students for the opportunity to visit forty activity displays with curricular connections. The fall 2002 Festival will have added activity displays.

DELEGATIONS
1)      The Grey County Historical Society

Ruth J. Thomas, President, stated that in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Grey County, the Historical Society decided to present the Board with enough copies of their book, “The Indian Princess” to distribute two copies per Grey County school.
Sheila Thibadeau Lambrinos, Sesqui Coordinator on behalf of the Grey County Historical Society, outlined Heritage Activities for the 150th Anniversary of Grey County for students and staff of Bluewater DSB.

2)      Bruce Township Central Public School Gordon Thompson and John Thornburn made individual presentations to the Board requesting that Bruce Township Central Public School not be closed.

REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE
The Board will engage in a province-wide search for a Superintendent of Secondary Education and candidates from Bluewater District School Board who are qualified, or will be qualified, by September, 2003 are encouraged to apply.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy Committee Report
The Board received the Policy Committee Report of a meeting held April 16, 2002. These policies were considered and the
following action taken:

BP 1802-D “Student Trustees” approved as amended.
BP 4602-D “Donations” referred to Business Committee prior to referral to the system for review.
BP 4655-D “Fund-Raising in Schools” referred to Community Relations Council and then to Business Council prior to referral to the system for review.
BP 1605-D “Partnerships in Education” referred to Community Relations Council prior to being referred to the system for review.
The Board approved the “Student Trustees” Policy as amended.

Educational Issues Committee Report
The Board received the Educational Issues Committee report of a meeting held May 7, 2002. The Committee received the following information reports:
•     Mathematics For Life: After School Numeracy Program Grade 7 & 8
•     Secondary School Reform
•     Let’s Learn (Early Registration/Identification Clinics)
•     OPSBA Proposal for the Recognition of Students at Risk

Business Committee Report
The Board received the Business Committee Report of a meeting held May 7, 2002. The Business Committee received the following verbal updates:
•     Deficit Management Plan Meeting with the Ministry of Education
•     Student Accommodation Review process and meetings held to date

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES
Average Class Size Report
Mary Anne Alton and Sandra Stevenson reported the average class sizes in Bluewater DSB for the 2001-02 school year. They are as follows: Elementary 24.46, Secondary 21.12.

Early Dismissal Days 2002-03 Report
The Board approved the Early Dismissal Plan which allows for a 2:00 p.m. dismissal on October 30 and November 27, 2002 and February 26 and April 30, 2003.

Field Trip Request
The Board approved the following field trip:
•     West Hill SS (Grade 11 & 12) Group Student Exchange (Canadian Educational Exchange Foundation) with France 2002-03.

STAFF REPORTS
Student Accommodation Review Reports
Refer to the attachment “Summary of Recommendations, Student Accommodation Review, Phase I”, for individual schools. The Board approved all recommendations.

COMMUNICATIONS
Correspondence
The Business Committee meeting re Budget (May 27, 2002) was cancelled.
