Board Meeting Highlights

October 15, 2002

David Armstrong announced the following accomplishments:

James Scongack, former Bluewater student trustee, was elected as Secretary of the Ontario Liberal Party. The youngest person ever elected to the position!
Derby Public School team of Leigh Morris, Principal; Aunalea Cruickshank, Learning Resource Teacher; and Scott Price, Developmental Learning Teacher received the “Inclusive Educator of the Year” – Bluewater in London on October 1.

Heritage Garden at Saugeen District Secondary School
Principal, Jim Rackley, introduced Heritage Garden Committee members: Teachers, Nanci Darlington-Smith, Jonna Ebel, Jan Sinclair and students, Saad Mazahir and Shariq Najmi. The mission of the group was “to beautify and naturalize the school grounds enhancing local biodiversity while demonstrating the value of ecological restoration”.  The design reflects the Scottish and aboriginal heritage of the area using native species of wildflowers, trees and shrubs and intricate walkway. The students gave a Power Point presentation on the project and the partnerships that evolved between the school and community which was reflected in many gifts of cash and material.
The Chair, Vice-Chair and Director congratulated staff and students and presented them with the Board’s Lapel Pin of Excellence.

Policy Committee Report (September 17)
The Committee received a presentation on Video Surveillance Cameras in Schools from two Georgian Bay Secondary School students, Emmett Ferguson and Wes Wright. Policy Committee will develop a policy with respect to video surveillance cameras in schools that will provide opportunity for further dialogue during the system review.

The Committee referred Policy BP 6701-D “Ontario Student Record” to the Board for Approval.

Richard Gerson provided information on Regulation 521 – Collection of Personal Information which will require current and new Bluewater employees to have a Criminal Background Check as well as an annual declaration.

David Armstrong reviewed the cyclical policy review chart for the current school year and the Committee moved the “Transportation” policy to April 2003 rather than June 2003.

The Board approved Policy BP 6701-D “Ontario Student Record”.

•     EQAO Results for OSSLT February 2002

The Committee received the following reports:

•     Student Accommodation Review

Field Trip Requests:
The Board approved the following field trip requests:
•     Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute Senior Science Killarney Trip (May 3-7, 2003)
•     Bruce Peninsula District Secondary School Outers Fall Hike - Bruce Peninsula National Park (Oct. 18-20, 2002)
•     Wiarton District High School Concert Band to Forbes Road, Pennsylvania, USA (April 9-13, 2003)
•     John Diefenbaker Secondary School Quebec SEVEC Exchange Trip (February 8-15, 2003)
•     Wiarton District High School Trip to Italy, France and Spain (May 8-19, 2003)
•     West Hill Secondary School Band and Choir Trip to Washington D.C. USA (May 1-4, 2003)
•     Kincardine District Secondary School Kinetic Knights Robotics Team Trip to First Robotics North American Championship, Orlando, Florida, USA (April 22-29, 2003).

The Educational Issues Committee received the following reports:
•     Summer School 2002 Final Report – the report contained recommendations regarding:
- expansion of the use of electronic tools to meet needs of summer school
- course offerings
- staffing
- transportation
- office support.
•     September 27th Professional Development Day Activities
Representatives from all employee groups described the activities that their members participated in on September 27th.

Dean Currie presented a Power Point presentation on the report to Education Equality Task Force on September 27th.
