EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

The “COOL SCHOOL” Contest
Principal, Barb Purcell, stated that as G.C. Huston P.S. prepared for its 50th Birthday celebrations, the school learned about OWL magazine’s contest for students to write or make a poster about why their school is “cool”. Many classes participated through the writing or poster option and then these works were displayed for the Birthday celebration. Principal, Barb Purcell, used Lindsay Plater’s poem in the formal moments of the afternoon as it conveyed all she needed to say from the students. After the celebration the students’ works were gathered and sent to Owl magazine as entries in the contest. Lindsay’s poem placed first across Canada in over 500 entries.

Lindsay’s Classroom Teacher, Chris Berry, connected the learning processes used in this particular task and stated that the contest showed them how important it is for their research team to study the learning needs of aboriginal students. The Arts approach to literacy helps students bring their experiences and feelings to their work. Their ways of thinking and sensing are forcing staff to critically examine their teaching practices.
