January 18, 2005

RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE

Slide Show – “Teachers are the Heart of Learning”
Alana Murray stated that the theme chosen by the System Professional Development Day Committee for the December 3 Secondary School Professional Development Day was “Teachers are the Heart of Learning”.
Charlie Bell, a member of the system P.D. Day Committee, shared an I-movie shown at the P.D. Day. It depicted teachers engaged in both curriculum-based and extra-curricular activities with students. He named the other committee members: Doug Goar, John Smith, Laurie Moore, Laura Cannon-Sherlock.
The Committee expressed appreciation for the work of Lorna Arnold and Cathy Woodley for coordinating the Wellness Information handed out at the P.D. Day.
Acting Chair, Jennifer Yenssen, and the Director presented Doug Goar and Charlie Bell with the Board’s Lapel Pin of Excellence.

Reports from Committee of the Whole (Closed Session)
Mary Anne Alton announced that Marilyn Rigden, Vice-Principal, Meaford Community School, will be appointed Principal of Sydenham Community School effective February 1, 2005.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Policy Committee
The Board received the Policy Committee Report of a meeting held December 14, 2004, and approved Policy BP 1101-D “Foundations for Learning” as amended. The Committee also considered the following polices:

BP 6950-D “Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition” – referred to the Secondary SAT Council prior to being referred to the system for review.
BP 5690-D “Private Music Instruction to Day School Students” –referred to the Elementary SAT Council prior to being referred to the system for review.
BP 7910-D “Teacher Exchanges” – referred to the Elementary and Secondary SAT Councils for review.

Educational Issues Committee
The Board received the Educational Issues Committee Report of a meeting held January 4, 2005.
The Committee also received the following reports:
•     Celebration – Militia and Bruce Power Cooperative Education Videos.
•     Bluewater Proposal for Project Funding to Support Studet Learning to 18.
Business Committee
The Board received the Business Committee Report of a meeting held January 4, 2005. The Committee received a report on the 2004-05 budget.

Joint Health and Safety Committee Report
The Board received the Report of a meeting of the Joint Health and Safety Committee held December 9, 2004.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES

Field Trip Requests
The Board approved the following five trips:

i)
West Hill S.S. students in the Choirs to participate in the Nationals at Musicfest Canada 2005 in Vancouver, B.C., from May 18-22, 2005.
ii)
Georgian Bay S.S. Intermediate and Senior Orchestra and Jazz Band to travel to New York City from May 20-23, 2005.
iii)
Grey Highlands Secondary School Grade 12 students’ Temagami Trip from June 6-17, 2005.
iv)
Saugeen District S.S. field trip for First Nations students to participate in the Business Development Bank of Canada-E-Spirit Competition in Edmonton, Alberta from May 8-12, 2005.
v)
Bluewater Regional Science & Technology Fair Winners trip to Canada-Wide Science Fair 2005 in Vancouver, B.C. from May 14-22, 2005.

40-Hour Community Involvement Activities Report
The Board approved additional 40-Hour Community Involvement Activities at Georgian Bay S.S. and John Diefenbaker S.S.

Request for International Exchange
The Board granted approval to Mark Cruikshank (teacher at Dufferin E.S., Owen Sound) to make application for an International Education Exchange to Australia to occur from January 1, 2006 to January 1, 2007.

STAFF REPORTS

Bluewater DSB Annual Accessibility Plan
George Mackowski and Ross Davidson, Accessibility Working Group members, presented an overview of the first Bluewater DSB Annual Accessibility Plan, which is a requirement of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001.  
The plan also outlines barriers to be addressed in 2004-2005. Dean Currie stated that we are fortunate to have some funding to make some of the repairs.
Employees may forward access concerns to the Working Group through ross_davidson@bwdsb.on.ca.

National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week
The Board approved preparation of a media release to honour all staff of Bluewater District School Board during National Teacher /Staff Appreciation Week, February 13-19, 2005.
