MEMORANDUM TO:

FROM:

RE:

Highlights of Meeting

Reports
(All written reports can be accessed on the Board’s website: www.bwdsb.on.ca and clicking on the button “Board Meetings”.)
Appointment of Bluewater Trustee
The Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Band appointed Mary E. Johnston as their representative to Bluewater District School Board. Mary took the Declaration for Member of School Board and was welcomed to her first Board meeting.

Excellence in Education:
i)      Beaver Valley Community School (Thornbury) – Terry Fox National School Run
Students and staff participated in the Terry Fox National School Run (Friday, September 16th). Their goal was to raise $20,000 and they surpassed it by almost $600.

Participation in the historic run and learning about Terry Fox and his amazing courage were focus points in each class as plans were made by students and staff. Classes set monetary as well as distance goals for themselves and celebrated in various ways when goals were achieved.

The day was filled with other activities that helped boost the amount of money raised. Leaves were sold on the Tree of Hope to remember loved ones whose lives have been touched by cancer, and as the tree’s branches were filled, it became apparent that many families had lost precious members to the disease.

The day was an enormous success, not only financially, but in terms of building self-esteem for the students and highlighting the important role fitness plays in our lives.

ii)     Bruce Peninsula District School Cafeteria – Healthy Choices
Principal, Pat Cavan; Cafeteria Manager, Antoinette Rauket; Cafeteria Staff member, Sandra Rydall; Student Trustee, Alanna Mann and Secondary School Student Council President, Kylin Taylor attended the Board meeting to tell trustees how the availability of healthy food choices can influence the eating habits of students. The school has maximized the nutritious food choices, and minimized the appeal of junk food. In doing so, the cafeteria has created an environment where students take nutrition into account in their food choices.

The Board recognized the staff and students from BPDS who have contributed to the success of the cafeteria program.
