Board Meeting Highlights


March 20, 2007

RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE
Doug Abell a teacher at John Diefenbaker Secondary School and a student, Kasey Dunn, were recognized at the Board Meeting.  Kasey was recognized for her determination and creativity and Doug Abell for his inspiration and support of students.  Kasey re-wrote, fundraised and produced a student production of “Antigone” at the Hanover Civic Centre.  Through her efforts three thousand dollars was raised which she donated back to the school to benefit other students to fulfill their dreams.

Chris Walker, a Chesley District Secondary School student was also recognized at the Board Meeting.  Chris has been selected as one of six students from an estimated three thousand students who during their visit to France to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge will be followed, photographed and interviewed by the Ottawa Citizen.

DELEGATION WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE
Terry Garbutt, coordinator of the Grey Highlands Volunteer Support Initiative presented a volunteer recognition proposal to the Board.

BUSINESS COMMITTEE
The February 20, 2007 report of the Business Committee was received.   At that meeting members received a schedule of 2007-08 budget preparation meeting dates.

The March 6, 2007 report of the Business Committee was received.  Members received a report outlining funding and projects for inclusion under the Ministry’s Good Places to Learn Stage Two Funding.

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES COMMITTEE
The March 6, 2007 report of the Educational Issues Committee was received.  Three items were presented:  Ontario Psychological Association Funding (Bluewater received $160,000 in funding to assist in reducing wait times for students); Character Education (initiative underway in Bluewater schools); Bowl for Big Brothers (Bluewater Bowling Babes received the High Pledge Award).

POLICY COMMITTEE
The February 20, 2007 Report of the Policy Committee was received.  Several policies were reviewed and one was referred to the board for approval.  Items brought forward for future consideration: EcoSchools Programs; One School Board Resolution; and Charter of Rights, 25 year celebration.
SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SEAC) REPORT
The report of the, February 22, 2007 meeting was received.   The committee was informed that Cindy Strickland was in the district working with teachers and administrators on differentiated instruction and also that a Section 23 class was opened in Walkerton in partnership with Keystone.

JOINT HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE REPORT
The report of the February 22, 2007 meeting was received.   The committee dealt with a number of items, including an administrative procedure for Confined Space Entry.

STUDENT TRUSTEE/SENATORS’ REPORT                     
Student Trustee/Senators reported that in their meeting they had discussed recruitment posters in secondary schools.  It was also reported that Student Senators will be elected at the individual schools by April 16, 2007.

Community Education 2005-06
Diane Murphy, Community Education Supervisor, presented the annual Community Education report.
Geneva Centre Provincial Training for Educational Assistants
A report was provided to the Board pertaining to funding received for the Geneva Centre for Autism to provide train to educational assistants in Ontario.  An outline of the training plan as well as the proposal to have our board sponsor a Regional Training opportunity was provided.

School Year Calendar
A traditional school year calendar was presented to the Board for approval.

Correspondence
Letter from Rick Johnston, President Ontario Public School Boards’ Association – complimenting the board on many practices and expressing appreciation for the board’s hospitality during their visit at last month’s board meeting.
