David Bouchard – The Gift of Stories and Reading

The Gift of Stories and Reading with David Bouchard, award winning Métis author and former educator will provide inspirational presentations and professional development for students, teachers and principals.

He will be travelling through the district from October 4th to 8th increasing awareness, understanding and appreciation of First Nation, Métis and Inuit cultures and histories through literacy. He will provide strategies and thinking for teachers to use when planning for instruction in literacy and be a positive role model for First Nations students.

The partnership with Bluewater District School Board, Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation will be enhanced through David Bouchard’s involvement.

Enrolment and EQAO Reports

An enrolment update for the month of September was given by the Superintendent of Elementary Education and the Superintendent of Secondary Education. As well they presented the EQAO 2009-2010 report.

Eva Olsson’s Presentation in Owen Sound

Trustee Marg Gaviller reported on Holocaust survivor, Eva Olsson’s presentation in Owen Sound where she shared her personal story of unimaginable struggle. Dr. Olsson warned the audience of the dangers of  ‘hate’, and encouraged everyone to remove that word from their vocabulary. She expressed the need for compassion in our schools and communities, and asked students to not play the role of bystander when injustices occur. “Everyone has challenges. Life is full of them. It is how you choose to deal with those challenges that is most important.”

Field Trips

The following trips were approved:
  • Grey Highlands Secondary School – Environmental Specialist High Skills Major and Environmental Studies Program Trips 2010-2011 – Killarney Canoe Trip, Bruce Trail Backpacking Trip and the Killarney Winter Camping Trip
  • Grey Highlands Secondary School  –  Boys and Girls Rugby Tour to North Carolina
  • Peninsula Shores District School ECO-Shores Program Trips – Winter Camp Trip, Spring Hike Trip, Killarney Canoe Trip
