Canada Wide Science & Technology Fair 2009
May 9 – 17, 2009 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Bluewater Regional Science & Technology Fair 2009 Canada Wide Science Fair Team has come home from the week long competition with triple gold, double silver, triple bronze medals and an honourable mention totalling twenty-eight thousand nine hundred dollars in cash and scholarships.

Bluewater Student Highlights include:
Grade nine student Vaibhavi “Sonu” Solanki of John Diefenbaker Secondary School, Hanover, won a bronze medal in the intermediate Physical & Mathematical Division with her project on Magic Squares.  Sonu attempted to create an order “3” three dimensional magic square.  Sonu wrote computer algorithms to assist her in the testing.  She discovered a branch of mathematics known as “Topology” where problems have no solution.  Sonu’s bronze medal also comes with a three hundred dollar cash award and a thousand dollar university entry scholarship.

Grade eight student Josie Mielhausen of Bruce Peninsula District School, Lion’s Head, won a bronze medal in the Health Sciences Division.  Josie’s project was titled, “You Are What You Eat.”  She studied the difference between local fresh market produce and the produce purchased in grocery stores using the “BRIX” standard.  Josie conducted a survey of local consumers in Bruce-Grey to see what purchasing patterns existed in our local area.  Josie concluded that the fresh market produce was more nutritional than store bought produce.

Grade eight student Rachel McLay of Bruce Peninsula District School, Lion’s Head, won an honourable mention in the Junior Physical & Mathematical Division.  An Honourable Mention carries a one hundred dollar cash award.  Rachel compared the energy use difference between incandescent light bulbs and the new energy efficient light bulbs.  The new bulbs also contain mercury.  Rachel studied the environmental impact of disposing of both types of light bulbs and the carbon footprint required to produce each bulb.

Congratulations also go to Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board students for their accomplishments.   Megan Schlorff of Sacred Heart Secondary School, Walkerton, who won the gold medal in the intermediate Earth & Environmental Science Division.  For the second year, Megan also won the gold medal in the Via Rail ENVIROEXPO interdisciplinary division.  Jenna Schlorff of Holy Family School, Hanover, won a gold medal in the Junior Physical & Mathematical Division and a silver medal in the AUTO 21 interdisciplinary division.  Laurissa Christie, grade ten, of St. Mary’s Secondary School, Owen Sound, won the silver intermediate Via Rail ENVIROEXPO medal with her project on Honey Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.  She also won the bronze medal in the intermediate Earth & Environmental Science Division.
