OSDSS Excels in University of Waterloo Mathematics Contests

Owen Sound District Secondary School mathematics students have once again captured the Zone Team Championship in mathematics contests hosted by the University of Waterloo. The top five scores in the Pascal contest (Grade 9) were Aidan Nelson, Maisie Cottrill, Teddy Scheifele, and twins Daniel and Michael Liscio, who combined to form the team score, which topped our zone (13 participating schools from Stratford northward). Each of these students also achieved individual Certificates of Distinction for scoring in the top 25 percent nationwide. Aidan Nelson earned the Pascal school medal for Grade 9 and placed 60th in the entire province.

OSDSS WolvesGrade 10 students Zunairah Hasan and Johnathon Coffey tied for the Cayley school medal, each with a top score at OSDSS.

The Grade 11 team writing the Fermat contest placed 2nd in our zone. The top five school scores belonged to Kazuki Maetani, Jesse Alguire, Gavin McGuiness, Sophia Cottrill, and Sophia Fairbairn. Kazuki, Jesse, and Gavin all achieved individual Certificates of Distinction, and Kazuki also took home the school medal for the Fermat contest.

In total, 40 OSDSS students wrote the contests in February. Tens of thousands of students write each of these contests worldwide annually. OSDSS participates every year, and typically does very well. OSDSS also participates in the Intermediate and Senior Mathematics Competitions each November. The Centre for Education for Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo administers the contests. The Grade 12 Euclid contest, which is usually held in April, has been postponed this year.

Bluewater District School Board elementary schools have also recently been involved in mathematics contests. Many have been participating in the Caribou math contests, which run several times throughout the school year.
Bluewater District School Board is located on the traditional land of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, which is represented by the communities of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.
