MCPS Sports Purple for Rowan's Law Day
On Wednesday, September 25th, students and staff at Mildmay-Carrick Public School wore purple in recognition and support of Rowan’s Law Day. Rowan’s Law was named after Rowan Stringer, a secondary school student rugby player from Ottawa, who died in the spring of 2013 from a condition known as second-impact syndrome (SIS). The condition is a swelling of the brain caused by a subsequent injury that occurred before a previous injury was able to heal. Rowan is thought to have experienced three concussions over six days while playing rugby, however, she was unfortunately unaware that her brain needed time to heal. Neither were her parents, teachers, or coaches. Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day were established to honour her memory and bring awareness to concussions and concussion safety. At the “Home of the Mildmay Thunderbolts”, the school community now knows the importance of the saying, HIT-STOP-SIT.
