As we honour Remembrance Day this year, we also mark the 100th anniversary of the poppy’s adoption as a symbol of remembrance in Canada.  For that reason, 2021 has been declared as the Year of the Poppy.

In addition to Remembrance Day ceremonies and assemblies, students and staff have been commemorating Veterans’ Week with a wide range of activities, art projects, and heartfelt tributes to show respect and expand learning.  This has included Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8 in recognition of the contributions and sacrifices of Indigenous Peoples and communities, who have consistently served Canada’s military efforts throughout history.

Here are just a few of the many examples of acts of remembrance that are occurring in Bluewater District School Board:

At John Diefenbaker Senior School, visual arts students have once again created poppy rocks for the Hanover Legion. Each painted rock displays a poppy and “thank you” inscription in honour of local veterans.  The purple rocks represent animals, such as horses, that have lost their lives during war.

The hallways at Owen Sound District Secondary School have been decorated with Remembrance Day themed displays in honour of current and previous members of our armed forces.  Students also recently made 250 personalized birthday cards, which they presented to local resident and World War II veteran Charles Fisher, who turned 107 years.

Port Elgin-Saugeen Central School students and staff have created many displays showing appreciation to those who lost their lives for our freedom, including a wreath memorial at the front of the school.  Conversations have focused on "what peace means to us", and an assembly in the gym featured a presentation by teacher Mr. Matthew Patterson, a military veteran who served in Afghanistan.

To mark Remembrance Day on November 11, the national flag is being lowered at all Bluewater District School Board schools and work sites.
