School Bus Safety Week from October 17 to 21, 2022 recognizes the importance of safety for students who rely on school bus transportation daily and creates awareness for motorists who share the roads with them.

Motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and school bus drivers and passengers all share a vital responsibility to practice diligence, pay careful attention to their surroundings, and obey rules of the road to ensure safety for all.

When in the presence of a school bus, other drivers must come to a complete stop while the red signal lights are flashing or face a significant fine and loss of demerit points under the Highway Traffic Act.  It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus.

As part of this week’s safety awareness, we also honour School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on Wednesday, October 19.  Bluewater District School Board takes this opportunity to recognize and thank school bus drivers for their dedication and the tremendous responsibility they shoulder each day to safely transport students to and from school.  Their efforts are pivotal to the successful operation of our education system.  Drivers are also often required for other travel involving students and staff, such as field trips and school-related events happening within and outside of school hours.  In addition to our amazing drivers, we acknowledge the work of our monitors, bus operators, and staff with the Student Transportation Service Consortium of Grey-Bruce for all they do to support school bus transportation in our local communities.

We encourage parents/guardians, students, school staff, and others to thank and/or acknowledge in some small way their school bus drivers and monitors this week for a job well done.

Bluewater District School Board is located on the traditional land of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, which is represented by the communities of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.
