Nuclear Innovation Institute speaks with students at roundtableA group of Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students in Bluewater District School Board recently had a unique opportunity to innovate, create, and learn about entrepreneurship.

A two-day ICE (Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship) event at Georgian College included secondary students from the two local school boards, and a student group from Denmark who have been participating in a program at the college.

The first day on Tuesday, February 28 featured the Mental Health and Wellness sector, while Wednesday, March 1 was dedicated to those in the Transportation, Energy, and Arts and Culture sectors.  In addition to their learning, students had a chance to tour the college campus.

The first day, which included approximately 100 students attending, involved learning about ambulation, leadership and communication, stress management, and sterilization in isotopes led by the Nuclear Innovation Institute.  On day two, community partners from various sectors provided students with a sector-specific overview along with the unique benefits of employment within each.  For example, students heard from an entrepreneur who started their own blacksmith shop.  Bruce Power presented on their many diverse career offerings in the various sectors, including engineering, the skilled trades, communications, and graphic design.  Details were also shared on the different careers in the marine industry, ranging working as a mechanic to culinary positions.

A group affiliated with Georgian College, called Changemaker, spoke about jobs of the future and associated educational requirements.  Student groups were each given a piece of Bristol board and challenged to develop the shell of a Lego character.  Afterwards, groups of students from the same sectors switched boards and designed an artifact reflecting aspects of the Lego character created by their peers.

Certifications were offered later in the day in the areas of fire safety, leadership and production management, marine engineering, and mental health and wellness/stress management.  The event also allowed students to obtain a Reach Ahead credit towards their secondary school diploma.

Many thanks are offered to all the community partners and staff who joined together to offer two amazing days of experiential learning for local students in the skilled trades!
