Steven Reid, Committee Co-ordinator, declared Trustee, Cindy Aitken, as Committee Chair of the Educational Issues Committee for the 2008 year.

The Educational Issues Committee received the following reports:
•     The Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship
•     Parent Involvement Committee
•     Diabetes Procedure
•     No Child Without
•     Overview of Committees with Trustee Representation

The Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship
Alana provided an overview of the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship program that rewards students who graduate with top marks at their high school and who plan to continue their studies at an Ontario college or university.  One hundred and seven Bluewater graduates received support through this scholarship program in 2006/2007.  This Ontario government sponsored program is open to all students who maintain an eighty percent average at the post secondary level and who undertake the application process.

Thirteen hundred students graduated from Bluewater secondary schools in 2007 and approximately $65,000 was donated by community members, clubs or agencies across all four pathways – workplace, apprenticeship, college and university in recognition of the success of these graduates.

Parent Involvement Committee
Mary Anne Alton introduced Chair Gail Fullerton and Susan Geisel who have been instrumental in carrying out the various projects of the Parent Involvement Committee.  The Committee was formed in 2007 in response to a Ministry requirement that each school board in the province create such a group with parents from across the board.  Trustee representation on the committee includes John Chapman, Ross King and Tim Reaburn. The committee meets once a month to advance the cause of parent involvement in education.  Each of the five Bluewater school areas is represented on the committee.

Gail Fullerton summarized the committee goals, structure, and accomplishments to date and plans for the balance of 2007-2008.  Gail was commended for her strong leadership of the Parent Involvement Committee and for the progress the committee has experienced in promoting parental involvement in education.

Discussion also took place regarding the role of School Community Councils in policy review and Gail will add the topic to the agenda for the next meeting of the Parent Involvement Committee.

Diabetes Procedure
Lori Wilder shared a report on the Diabetes Procedure used in support of Bluewater students suffering from the disorder.  This included the Board Policy BP 6802 and reference to the Provision of Medical and/or Physical Assistance manual located in each school.  Training is provided for school staff in recognizing the signs and symptoms of either high or low blood sugar levels, glucose testing and administering of oral medication.  School staff are not expected to administer injectable insulin to students.  The report also included a Diabetes Care Plan School Checklist and a sample emergency plan.

No Child Without
Lori provided information on a project involving provision of Canadian Medic Alert bracelets and memberships to all elementary school students with pre-existing medication conditions at 15 schools.  This allows the child’s condition to be quickly identified in the event of a medical emergency.  Medic Alert will continue to work with the Board to expand this free program to other schools in the district over the next five years.

Overview of Committees with Trustee Representation
Mary Anne Alton provided a summary of board committees with trustee representation and a chart to be completed by each trustee indicating interest in continuing on current committees or interest in being considered as a representative on a new committee.  The one exception was the SAT/Union Trustee Meetings that occur six times a year.  A decision regarding trustee participation will be made following completion of the forms.  Trustees were asked to complete and return the forms by December 17th and an announcement regarding trustee representation on all committees will be made at the December board meeting.
