'Concours' Showcases Students' French Proficiency

Student wearing medal and holding certificateSeventy-Four Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) Grades 4 to 12 students representing 11 schools stepped up to the podium to showcase their French skills over two exciting evenings during the annual Concours d’Art Oratoire/French public speaking contest.

Hosted at the BWDSB Education Centre in Chesley, in partnership with the provincial and local chapters of Canadian Parents for French (CPF), students could compete in the categories of Traditional on Wednesday, March 25 or Impromptu on Thursday, March 26.

Schools were invited to send up to three students to compete in the Traditional category, while any student wishing to participate in Impromptu could attend. Each competition was divided into the categories of Core French, French Immersion, and Francophone to reflect different programming in BWDSB schools. Rules, judging, and category placements were conducted by staff, who followed CPF guidelines.

Grades 9 to 12 first place winners will now advance to the provincial contest at Glendon College in Toronto on May 2, 2026. Grades 11 and 12 provincial champions will be eligible for post-secondary scholarship opportunities.

BWDSB wishes the best of luck to those who are moving on to the provincial level and commends all participants in this year’s ‘Concours’ event on their willingness to demonstrate their French proficiency through public speaking.
