The sun shone and temperature soared outside the home of the Eagles as families and community members joined students, staff, and guests for Alexandra Community School's first-ever pow wow on Friday, June 21.
Held during the afternoon of National Indigenous Peoples Day, the festivities began on the sports field with a grand entry featuring Saugeen Ojibway, student, and adult dancers dressed in beautifully patterned regalia. Audience members were then invited to participate by joining hands for a communal circle dance to the thundering background beat of the Chippewa Travellers Family Drum Group.
Drumming, dancing, food stations, and vendor booths kept the afternoon on a steady roll as attendees celebrated and learned about Indigenous culture. Congratulations to Alexandra students, staff, and School Council members on a successful inaugural pow wow event, which reaffirmed the school's strong commitment to Indigenous learning and reconciliation, while bringing the community together.
