An Evening of Art at Northport
Posted on 05/24/2022

Students, parents/guardians, grandparents, and community members had a chance to take in some awe-inspiring creative displays on Thursday, May 12, 2022 as the Grade 6 class at Northport Elementary School in Port Elgin hosted "An Evening of Art".
The school was transformed into an art gallery, showcasing pieces from various grades along with a display of Grade 6 photography prints.
As part of the Grade 6 social studies investigations on Canada’s interactions with the global community, Northport students wanted to show their love and empathy. They were inspired to be ‘change makers’ in our global community by providing support to those impacted by the current crisis in Ukraine. The school is thanking all who generously contributed through Northport’s online donations link, which has raised $1,000 to date! A special mention is extended to student Kennedy O’Brien, who chose to ask for donations for her birthday party in lieu of gifts. The Northport Cougars know how to make a difference!
The project was enabled through an experiential/outdoor learning grant application submitted by Grade 6 teacher Rebecca Carey. Both Grade 6 classes participated in a series of photography workshops led by Jennifer O'Reilly, which focused on learning how to take macro, landscape, and portrait photos connecting to biodiversity, energy, visual arts, and both social studies units. Tips for the successful composition of photos and editing were also discussed.
With a strong desire to make a difference globally after having participated in many local initiatives earlier this year, the students chose to raise money for Red Cross Ukraine efforts. A Red Cross representative came to speak to the students about the organization and need that exists all around the world. Students then started to plan and prepare their art show with the goal of collecting online donations for a great cause. The show was a huge hit, and the students and staff are ecstatic with the response to their fundraiser.
Credit is owed to Rebecca Carey and her Grade 6 teaching partner, Andrea Anions, who helped make the show a huge hit, and Experiential Learning Lead Andrea Rideout for all her guidance and support with the grant. Additionally, Jennifer O’Reilly is thanked for her inspiring photography workshops, as well as Experiential Learning, the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, and the Specialist High Skills Major Construction program at John Diefenbaker Senior School for assisting in making Northport's dreams come true!
