On Thursday, April 11, 2024, Bluewater District School Board’s (BWDSB's) top archers participated in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) area tournament. Held at the Keady Community Centre, this was the first in-person tournament since COVID restrictions put the annual event on hiatus.
Archers from Alexandra Community, Hillcrest Elementary, John Diefenbaker Senior, and Sullivan Community schools all participated in the tournament, thanks to the support of the Eva Leflar Foundation, which provided equipment, and the Township of Chatsworth's donated use of the facility.
Scores from the local tournament were compared to other schools that participated in their own NASP competitions to determine provincial results.
After the final provincial scores were tabulated, the Hillcrest Intermediate Division team emerged as Ontario champions! Their cumulative total of 2,549 was followed by the Alexandra Community School team, which finished second in the province with a total of 2,316 points.
Noah Westover from Hillcrest was also crowned Ontario Champion in the Boys’ Intermediate Division with a total score of 258, followed by Alexandra’s Brodey Moreau with a score of 250. Tyson Dedrick of Hillcrest finished in fourth place with a total of 238.
The coaches of all BWDSB archery teams are extremely proud of the hard work and focus of the student participants, and hope that even more archers will participate in the future.
NASP began in 2002 as a pilot project in Kentucky. It now has nearly 15,000 students participating in 11 different countries. The program has been in Ontario since 2016 with the number of certified schools growing every year. It is proudly sponsored by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.
