Sandwiched in between a couple of snow days, the Bluewater Elementary Sports Council (BESC) was able to host their annual volleyball championships. Each year, the level of competition is remarkable, and this time was no different. Both boys’ and girls’ events consisted of strong teams from each of Bluewater District School Board’s four regions. Teams successfully qualified from their own region for the opportunity to play in the BESC championships.
From the opening serve, it was clear that competition was going to be fierce all day. On the boys’ side, it was an all-northeast matchup with Hillcrest Elementary School and Beaver Valley Community School competing in a rematch of a game from one week prior. Hillcrest entered the finals with a straight set win over a solid squad from Saugeen District Senior School, while Beaver Valley took a challenging three-set victory over Kincardine District Senior School. The Huskies from Hillcrest with their strong offence and sound defence overcame the Beaver Valley Cobras, winning the finals in straight sets 25-12 and 25-11.
While the girls’ event was equally strong, it was evident that the Trojans from John Diefenbaker Senior School and the Knights from Kincardine District Senior School, were going to be the envy of this year’s group. After defeating Osprey Central School and the host Falcons from East Ridge Community School respectively in the semifinals, the tone was set. The top seeded Trojans and Knights were set to play for the rights to be called BESC Champions. With strong serving and attacks from both teams, those in attendance were treated to a very competitive match. It was the overall ball control from the Knights that carried them to a straight set 25-13 and 25-12 win.
Many thanks are extended to all participating teams for a wonderful event, and congratulations to Hillcrest and Kincardine on their victories.
