Happy anniversary to Egremont Community School in Holstein! A celebration to mark 60 years took place on Saturday, September 14, 2024 with a large crowd in attendance, including former and current staff, and several administrators, alumni, and current students, along with their family members.
The nostalgic event kicked off with a speech from current principal, Lisa Russell, reflecting on the importance of community. Brian Milne, Mayor of Southgate and Egremont alumni, engaged the audience with a speech full of fond memories and acknowledgement that the occasion was “not just about celebrating a building as an institution, but a chance to celebrate, remember, and thank everyone who made a difference. From teachers and education staff, to dedicated parent councils and student presidents, many people play a huge part in making our rural schools a reality.”
The opening ceremony included a tribute to the school’s office professional, Anna Marie Timmins for her many years of service, 38 in total to Egremont and 45 to Bluewater District School Board. A time capsule from 1996 was opened to reveal a display of pictures, writing excerpts, and profiles of many students who attended Egremont at the time. The time capsule, which was discovered when cleaning out school cupboards, was titled, “Do Not Open Until 2020.” Despite the four-year delay, the time capsule reveal was a great addition to the event.
