On Monday, May 1, a team of Grade 11 students from Bruce Peninsula District School (BPDS) braved the elements for a day of engaging experiential learning as they participated in this year’s Envirothon at the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre.
The Envirothon allows schools to compete annually for a chance to move up to higher levels where they can win scholarships. It is offered to Grades 7 to 12 students, with resources provided to teams near the beginning of each school year to help them prepare.
The BPDS students gained experience in activities in four different sectors: Forestry, Aquatic, Soils, and Wildlife. They also had to develop a researched presentation based on a topic that had been given two weeks prior to the event. In each sector, the students had 25 minutes to complete the study. The presentation was held right before lunch and judged by different experts within the environmental industry.
Last year, BPDS placed sixth provincially in the virtual Envirothon competition. The school has qualified for the provincials once again this year, demonstrating the longstanding tradition and support of enabling students hands-on outdoor learning opportunities at BPDS.
